Minor help needed HDD

Just got a new system and I want to transfer my backup hard drive from the old to the new. Its been too long since I added the back up to the other computer. A question, the ribbon from MB to drive to drive, is the first the main and the other slave? And yes Taw, its a compaq. Got a good deal.

512 mb ram, will install other strip to 1gb
DVD +r/rw/ CD- R/RW Drive
CD rom Drive
160gb hdd
AMD Athalon 2.16ghz
Adding a ATI 9600 SE 128mb
Onboard photo, ect card reader
6 USB ports
Modem

I want to get it up and runing, but need to know for sure on the hdd . The both look the same in place.

Thanks in advance.

I didnt ever know it mattered to be honest...

Actually I don't think it does matter (as long as your jumpers are set), but it makes installation a lot easier.

I've never trusted cable-select, and never will. Thank the God of Computers for jumpers!

The jumper was set, I just could not remember the order that I put it into the case. Compaq just made me a good offer, the whole thing for jut $679, which ain't bad. I still want to build one, just not right now. The very first one I had was a custom built, but cost $600 and that was in back in 1998.

I'm doing my back-ups now for transfer to the new one. Got about 5gb to transfer. Can't transfer by cable as I only have one monitor. But it is going well. A lot will be put on the slave HDD to swap over. Can't wait till its running.

Taw - Jumpers are great, but I still remember the good ole days of DIP switches on MBs... I could never find a pen when I wanted to play with them though .

Well, its up and running, sort of. I got the 1gb ram working, the Slave hdd working, but it will not reconise the ATI card at all. I checked the settings and changed it from PCI to AGP/onboard setting, but to no avail. It will not show the card as being there. When I plug the monitor in to the card I get the bouncing message of no connection. The card is secure as I can see. I did as the instructions said, to install the divers first, shut down and then install the card. No luck, so at the moment, I am using 64mb of shared mem for the video. Any Ideas?

have you seated the card properly? very very common for AGP cards to not q fit, take it out and reseat it.

Post Sat Jul 03, 2004 7:40 am

Just did, Not working. My old computer would let me disable using onboard, but this one won't. I even tried disableing the current adapter, no go. This sucks. I might try my old nivdea card to see if it works. Hate to think I got a bad card. I would not be happy losing $129.

Update - I swaped the ATI card with my old nivid card and it picked it up right away. AGP and all. It looks like I got a bad card. Bummer. I may see about getting a better nivid card now as I want more video mem.
