how can i close it then?
(port 21)

Aod, the only thing I can think of is to change your fire wall settings. Norton doesn't let any of mine be seen, even if in use.

Old news Esquilax.

Steve Gibson has forgotten more about internet security than most know.

He's a semi-regular on Tech TV for a good reason.

I'm on McAfee's s'ware firewall/av and I passed too. Always feel insecure when I'm told I'm locked up nice and tight. There has to be someone out there already working on a way to get passed my defenses.

port 139 stealthed, Netbios connection attempt... failed
all ports are closed apart from 80, 254 and 255.
ports 21, 23, 135, 139, 445 and 593 are cloaked.
Ok, if anyone will give me the data, i need to know how to close ports 80, 254 and 255 from outside access, and how to 'tell' my computer to 'drop' or ignore ping requests to my computer

Great. Stinger comes out of retirement to tell me that I'm outdated! It's good to see you around Rob.

Hmm, well either people around here have better defences than I first believed, or else the test isn't that good. Hmm...

Chips - No problem. It's a comforting feeling isn't it? Knowing that your PC is secure (against standard attacks anyway) .

Mustang - Don't worry. The job and the broadband connection are coming...

I'm never in retirement, I just don't respond unless I've got something to say worth posting.

My presense has become like a fart in the wind around here. You smell me come and go, but have no clue where it came from nor where it disapated. The only proof of my existence is threads disappear, get editted. My spamming days are well behind me on TLR...and that's a good thing because my dry humor is an acquired taste.

My home machine appears to be wide open to attack - but I have no idea how to fix these problems...if I post what it says, will someone help me through it?

Get yourself a bit of firewalling software grom, that'll close off those unwanted ports. This is one of those areas that I really prefer working on Linux, security is the gnats nuts on most distributions. Port scanning a windows box is a little scary to see what's left out in the breeze.

For starters, you can shut down Netbios in MSConfig. It is a little box you need to uncheck on the Static VxD tab in MSConfig (Run - MSCONFIG).

The rest of it, you are better off installing a s'ware firewall which will do the job in one go. Did you download the stuff on that test site? Those freebies also will do some of the work, one at a time.

@Taw....

Moving to quieter pastures?

Stop being so bloody ambiguous Taw. I hate it when peeps do that, makes em sound like they're going to die.

I thought that it might be something along those lines Stinger. I'm not sure about your flatulence analogy though .
