Well, it''s that time of year again...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

why are you doing your dissertation if you have no interest in it? did you ever have interest in it?

..there is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro..

Prolly a condition of his employment. My W.A.Guess is that Zlo is a perfesser somewhere and he needs is PhD to keep the seat, financinng or something like that.

Don't know about elsewhere but I've run into quite a few "I hate my dissertation" types in academia. I get the sense that the discussion with the Dept. about what would be an appropriate dissertation is the focus of a lot of discussion and, also, often times a matter that is driven down from the reader to the writer.

my art history prof. wanted me to do a dissertationbased on a subject of his choosing, actually it was one of his paintings (a painting owned by him, not one he'd done) I told him to sod off I was doing Filarete and that was that. most displeased he was.

We didn't to no stinkin' dissertations when I was at Uni. We did oral presentations though . I remember one presentation in which I sent a "Celtic-Irish Kingship" Powerpoint presentation through a series of networked PCs in the tutorial room. Ah, the good old days...

Mine is/was (nearly done) a fully specced network project, Project Specification, Network Specification, Security Policies, User Documentation (about 200 odd pages all up). Then have to build a DHCP/FTP subnetted server (linux) and a DC/DNS server (W2K) and jam it into a network to be tested. Thankfully everything has gone off without a hitch so far, but it has really sucked the fun out of life. Oh well, freedom is only 20 odd pages around the corner and the servers have been tested and passed.

?Interesting. Using FTP and DHCP on the same server is probably ok, but using DNS on a DC is not such a good idea, as there are security concerns if you haven't done it correctly (not that I'm accusing you of anything ). Additionally, DCs use up a lot of CPU time, depending on how many users you have, and how complex your Active Directory setup is. You know all this, why I am posting it? Sorry, I'm just bored .

@Indy: yep, right to the point, plus my boss wants to make as many PhDs as possible to able to boast to others how cool our Dept. is. I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to pay for her ambitions

Well, first off, she got me into this PhD stuff, which I have no interest in (not willing to lose the job, I had to agree). Not to mention the fact that the university at which I'm supposed to do this has its own favorite methods that I first have to understand to be able to tell whether i like them or not. They have completely changed the research topic, and now my supervisor wants to quit since she doesn't know the subject either. And on monday I'm supposed to pass certain certification, and I don't have a clue what to talk about - I strongly doubt that my complaints will be of any interest to anybody. My boss arranged that my university pays to the one I'm supposed to be doing my research, so I'm financially responsible too. Looks like it's dead end. The good thing about it is that I'm not alone - a colleague of mine is exactly in the same situation.

Unfair! I want summer as well
5 days of exam left, then I miss the last 3 days of school due to a chess thingy and then supposedly 3 weeks of holiday but I got projects
I refuse

Goodbye is such a little word and yet it brings such pain to think; we were best friends once and we'll never meet again

Had to work with what we were given and follow specs, so I didn't have a choice in the matter. It was only a 2 client network anyway, so the overheads were'nt all that high.

sw, I'll swap you my summer for your winter. I'm a cold weather person myself.

Fair enough Mustang. It reminds me of the "Network Project" I did last year.
