Major purchase day!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Major purchase day!

That's right folks, it's that time of the year again when I go out and spend an exhorbitant amount of money on a piece of electronic gadgetry that I don't really need. Oh what joy! *rubs hands with glee*

Normally I would just go out and buy something with little prior research and then spend weeks trying to justify my purchase. However this year I've decided to deal with buyers guilt prior to to picking up my piece of wanten consumerism.

In the sights this year is a digital SLR camera. Now I had my heart set on a Canon EOS 300D, they're cheap (relatively speaking), effective and have achieved good reviews. I can pick one of these up with a 18-55mm & 70-200mm lenses and a 256Mb Flash card for $2,200 AUD.

However I've been reading a few reviews of the Nikon D70. It appears to produce a very slightly better quality shot than the Canon but does have better controls whereby almost everything (white balance, apature setting, shutter speed, ISO etc) can be manually tuned to your liking whereas the Canon provides a lot of presets and very little in the way of fine tuning. The feature set on the Nikon is also a lot better, eg it can shoot at 3fps for 12 shots as apposed to the Canon at 2.5 fps for 4 shots. The shutter sound on the Nikon certainly sounds a lot more meaty and confident than the Canon too. I can get one of these with a 18-70mm lense and a 128Mb flash card for $2,300.

Both appear to be good cameras but the Nikon is the more professional and better put together piece of kit but I can get an additional lense and an extra 128mb of storage for $100 cheaper with the Canon. I'm a complete novice when it comes to SLR photography and I know some of you have some experience with SLR and I was wondering what you guys would go for if you had your choice. Keep in mind I'll probably want to purchase another two lenses for close up and distance shots.

Mustie, you're going to have to learn to control your instincts before you start getting a pension ........

The Nikon. Canon are ok, but I've had some bad experiences with their stuff over the years (damn "BubbleJets"!).

what a coincidence esq, i also ditched my canon bubblejet in favor of lexmark.

Canon printers and the like simply don't compare with the cameras, which are excellent, esp the EOS range. But Nikons are better than that, for the reasons stated. . I've been looking myself at virtually the dame choices, although I'm considering one of the similarly specc'd Olympus'.

I really like digital photgraphy but I'm hampered by my current digi being point and shoot. I've never trusted automatic focusing and exposure, I've been taking photos for long enough to know when I need to open or close the stops based on film speed and conditions. tbh my Mrs uses the digi more now for her Ebuy stuff, I've gone back to my SLR - pictures are better. But I do like the immediacy of digi and the editing freedom with a pc, so I'll be doing the same as Ms Tang fairly soon.

Ok...this is very very simple...if you can afford it, buy the Nikon D70 or I shall come around to your house and...errr...and....err well nothing I suppose, but damnit, me coming to your house should be scary enough!! BUY IT! NOW!

The D70 is a seriously serious camera. The reviews have been outstanding, better than any other I've seen before. Remember, its only been out for a few months, the canon has been around for over a year, there's bound to be more about the canon. As for the Canon pampering options - forget it! You're a REAL MAN, you don't need pampering! You want lots of little fiddly things that you have no idea how to use! Seriously though, if you want an SLR, and you are determined to learn how to use an SLR, forget the Canon its too girly, the Nikon will last you a lifetime (so to speak). And if you want other reasons - the resolutions are better and the pixel rate is ever so slightly, yet significantly higher (about .3 of a megapixel).

And if you are still not sure, and you want the pro's to spell it out to ya, click here my friend

HTH.

$2,200 AUD, the word for that is "Ouch!!" I could never see paying more that 250 US for it. Unless for professional purposes. My wallet would be screaming at me for months...

let it scream, you know it loves it

besides, its not the screaming that does you in, its the silence....

Having asked my photographer friend......

Nikon. IF you intend seriously to get into digital photography.

All of those manual settings capabilities are wasted on the novice unless that novice expects to become an expert over time.

The Canon EOS is geared toward bringing semi-expert result to picture takers who really will not "get it" in the end, hence the pre-sets.

Great! Thanks guys, I was leaning towards the Nikon but needed to know that I was doing the right thing and not just wasting my money. Though i'll probably have to wait a few weeks to fill up my coffers a bit more or at least jam a bit on credit.

@Grom,

The value of silence is underrated. Wait until you and the missus spawn gromlets.

@Mustang,

I came across a review of the D70 that said that there was one drawback about it. Something to do with "excessive moire" patterns appearing in some shots.

Will have to look it up some more... the article that is. But over all, still highly regarded.

Actually all of the lower end DSLR's seem to have issues with some batches. Some D70's seem to have a backfocus problem (that can be fixed under warranty) and the 300D's are having their shutters detonate at 10 - 20,000 shots.
