i changed the refresh rate on my sys and messed up my monitor big time

Post Sat Jun 12, 2004 6:37 pm

I can't believe you guys are running at 60htz. My eye's really sting at that refresh rate, so much so I have to look away from the screen. I can literally feel the optic muscles relax when I boost it up over 75. Most CRT's should be able run well over 80htz these days. However LCD users are stuck at 60 but the way they refresh is quite different from CRT, so your eye's don't get half as tired.

The whole "refresh rate" argument is very interesting. When I started getting headaches after using the machine, I realised that it was because my monitor couldn't support anything over 60Hz in 1280x960. My family teased me when I picked up a 19" Philips monitor because they couldn't see the other one flicker, and they thought that it was a waste of money, but they came around the first time I showed them the difference. Indeed, two months later, there was a sudden shortage of good quality 19" monitors at the local computer shop .

Wanna see the flicker at 60hz? focus on a poin JUST above the screen, but with the screen largely visible in the "corner of your eye". You will see it rapidly flickering. Then try this at 80hz

I actually like CRT monitor better than LCD, I dont know why, but fot me CRT is better, it's just bad if I have to read a story or sth, but I'm getting used to it now

sw - Now you are getting into the whole "Is CRT better than LCD?" argument. In any case, I think that we all know the answer to that question (dependent upon your definition of "better" that is ).

Nick I was actually only mentioning what I experienced

I prefer LCD, got one in fact, the only thing i'd say that sucks about them is they set the native resolution to high. So everytime your rig can't hack playing at 1280x1024 and you have to drop back to 1024X768 everything looks smudged. Forget about 800x600. I honestly can't say I've had any other thing to complain about, in every other area it solidly outperforms any other CRT i've used (excepting the 21" Trinitrons) for picture quality.

sw - Nick? I don't know any Nick .

Mustang - LCDs are usually easier on the eyes, but in terms of reponse time and picture quality, a good quality CRT is the way to go.

I disagree, with 16ms response time on current LCD's (some 12ms) the difference is undetectable to the naked eye.

Post Mon Jun 14, 2004 2:39 am

There's still far too much ghosting on most LCDs in my experience, and only a few have "true" black. Still, I'm just picky .

but the dpi is still better on CRT

..there is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro..

On newer crt's, what is the best refresh rate you can get. Mine is a 1999 modle year and I can only get 85 out of it.

For what, old chum? I DO know a "Nick". Coincidently, he also has a fascination with TLR and ginger beer .
