Post Sat Jun 19, 2004 6:40 am

that an author or a story?

Post Sat Jun 19, 2004 6:59 am

author, HP Lovecraft, early 20th C writer of psychological horror stories. invented a whole "Mythos" of interconnecting legends, characters, places and events, like a modern multi-verse concept, which has been added to and enhanced since his death by many well known (and not so well known) writers.

Lovecraft was an American but wrote like an Englishman. His descriptive work and creation of tension and suspense are excellent, my only beef with him is that he can't finish a story properly, his heroes always swoon or go mad. But the stories themselves are excellent., in fact I'm reading August Derleth's sequel stories at the mo'.

I also highly recommend CS Lewis' sci-fi trilogy, whch unf gets a bit religious and preachy in places for my tastes, but apart from that, is bl**dy excellent, again very different sci-fi to the point it isn't really sci-fi. in order they are "Out of the Silent Planet" "Voyage to Venus" also known as Perelandra, and my pers fav "That Hideous Strength" read em at school when I was about 15 and was captivated, but didnt really read them again or understand them properly until I was about 30.

and if you ever get the chance you have to read Italo Calvino's "Castle of Crossed Destinies" in which a group of traveller, who don't know each other, are trapped in a mysterious tavern/castle in a forest and have been robbed of the power of speech by a spell, and have to communicate their stories via an old pack of tarot cards. as the overall story is told by one and only one of the travellers, our author, everything is subject to his interpretation and is full of ambiguity. for example, if someone uses the Page of Cups, is it because he's a page himself, or the picture looks like him, or does it indicate drunkeness or youthful folly? every card has numerous meanings and symbolisms, and the travellers have to guess which ones are appropriate, plus they aren't all as eloquent and educated as each other (but then you don't really know as no-one can spk to explain matters) Also they start stealing the best cards that encapsulate their individual stories leaving the later storytellers to be more inventive with the less distinct cards that are left.

he isn't in the vampire league, although that forms a part (a small part) of his Mythos and actually stands for something else. But it's very difficult to pigeonhole Lovecraft, he is q unique, and virtually reinvented the horror genre by himself, although he was very much influenced by Poe, and to some extent by Stoker. You're right to be disturbed btw!

"That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And within strange aeons even death may die."

there's q a Lovecraft following on TLR, and you'd be surprised at who some of them are! so you don't have to take my word for any of this, I'm sure the more garrulous will make themselves known...

What gave you the idea I like horrors?

Post Sat Jun 19, 2004 9:28 am

it's the quality of the writing and the structure that shine out even if you don't like horror. I don't like horror very much, but I'll read Lovecraft any day of the week.

I like books on historic war, mostly World War 2 and the Middle Ages(mostly because I can't seem to find something on a different war). I also like fiction books, on eof my favorite authors in that category is Eoin Colfer.

I've just finished reading Chaos and Order by Stephen Donaldson. It's a masterpiece of science fiction.
