Apple''s Flaw?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Apple''s Flaw?

Article I had always heard they were stable and no holes. Does anyone use it and since I have not, I'm looking for a little feeback on the Mac. I do know that they have a lot of software programs that mirror the ones on windows. So do they run any better?

Post Mon May 24, 2004 5:47 pm

Macs are supposed to be able to run things better than PCs because of two main factors. One, OS X is based upon Unix which is far superior to the Windows kernel in terms of performance, and in terms of security (this helps to explain why there are so few reported vulnerabilities. That, and also that not many people hack Macs). Two, Mac programs are wiritten for a specific proprietary CPUs, MBs, and other components. This means that they can be optomised, as the creators don't have to worry about different instruction sets for AMD CPUs, P3 CPUs, P4 CPUs, AMD64 CPUs, and lots of diverse MBs, chipsets, etc. The programs on Mac are supposed to be quite good too, although I haven't been near a Mac in years unofrtunately.

Remember also, that this is not a "Mac" vulnerability, but a vulnerability present in a piece of software running on the OS, which is not that unusual.

omg Esq.

MAC's are stable, I'll give you that hands down but that comment about why they aren't "hacked" blew my mind.

Windows is hacked more often because of the hatred for the company that produces the product. Hacking a MAC is by design much more simple BUT users don't want to ruin a good (free) thing either. Unix is open source...think about it.

MAC's more secure? Sure but not for the reason you think.

That's also true for the linux community.
It's the same reason, but with the fact that more experienced computer users use it, nobody dares hack it because they will be tracked down !
Windows users are usually un-experienced , and are open to hacking.
However, I use linux quite alot

Post Mon May 24, 2004 8:42 pm

Stinger - Exactly, that was I meant. Despite the fact that fewer people hack Macs, the kernels of Linux and Unix are far superior to Windows' because of that very fact; they are open source. While I do not doubt that if Unix and Linux were reviled as much as MS, many, many vulnerabilities would be found by hackers, the kernels are still, in their present form, more secure than Windows. Not that that's difficult .

what happened? i could have sworn there were more posts here

No, you're just confused Wolfy .

One of the reasons I asked about Macs, is I had noticed that Taw had one, as I am still trying to learn more, wanted feed back about them and OS X, ect. Thanks for your feedback Esq. Mags can give statistics, as can web site, but how something actually works for people, is better to understand them.

Any time, Final . Indeed, real world examples are always preferable to dry statistics, and it's a good thing that you realise that. So many people are lured into buying junk just because some guy somewhere gives a bad product a good review.

I got mine cheap from work, I'm learning Quark Xpress on it. There's a few design packages I want to try out. I like it (and it does look beautiful) and it's a lot more stable than even XP Pro, if a little sluggish but I haven't sussed out how to get the best out of it - I'm not very knowledgeable about Macs, much as I admire them. All the internet crap is the same though and everyday use theres no diffference. But who'd have a Mac as a home PC, when PCs are so much cheaper.

it's an Aqua G3 btw.

..how I dearly wish I was not here..

my mom is a graphic designer, she uses a fully
tooled G4 power mac, it runs nearly anything i
throw at it, even with a rage 128, it still manages
those "ultra-complex" 3D renders with little difficulty

if you do get one, make sure that you buy it direct from
Apple, we bought our from a tertiary (3rd in the chain)
retailer, and it has a faulty chipset, meaning we cant have
more than 128Mb of ram, and cant upgrade processor.

still they look Fookin Shiny.
PS, Macs can be a Biatch to setup, if your gonna get
a new mac, make sure you have the time an patience
to set then up right, if not, the restart button is your friend.
Note, that when properly set up, they are steadier than rocks.

I still have that dinosaur OS 8.6

That is good to know, Aod, and yes I do understand they are higher priced.

maybe i got the wrong impression about macs then.. those at school hang up every 3 minutes and have 8mbs of ram took like 10 minutes to transfer some 10kb file from floppy to drive takes forever to load *anything*.

With the amount of topics - it would almost be nice to have a forum for computery stuffage - like threads about OS, cards, drivers etc etc - cause it could be a compact database.....but then this is a Freelancer Fan site - and not a support site

@kimk

sounds like cr*ppy old Macs that now are overtaxed.
