Big box or Small box?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Big box or Small box?

Ok, its been quite a while (few years) since computer game manufacturers introduced the smaller, more economical, easier to store small game boxes. So this isnt new for anyone here, but looking back on all these years, which ones do you prefer? Personally, I like the smaller ones much much more. I still have several games, which have a HUGE box, with a single cd and a tiny tiny manual in it. It wasnt only a waste of money and cardboard but it just looked dumb. Sure, you could fit more advertising and shots on a bigger box, but assuming most people who buy games are gamers they probably know what they want to buy, and if they dont they probably know websites where they could find out more about a game. The reason I posted this was because I was recently at this one site, looking at an old game, in several user reviews, people were complaining about small boxes (like "give me back the big boxes or ill never buy a game again!) . Which is fine, certain people have preferences to certain things but I personally think the choice to go small box did not only help companies financially (by not wasting as much print or cardboard) They had to trim the manuals down aswell, almost to match sort of like a small book for your pocket.

Some people may not like that and it is understandable but for those of you who have Neverwinter Nights, and Empire Earth. Which manual is easier to keep by your computer and look through for something? And Im still eagerly awaiting the day computers get DVD players standard. Then maybe, JUST maybe, we can get those cool plastic DVD boxes like all the consoles do.

big box. that's the way it always was and that's the way it should stay. For the same reason I still prefer 12" covers (vinyl records) to poxy cd's.

Yeah... packaging has really gone downhill in recent years.
When I was a wee lad, you could get CocaCola in glass bottles. These days, not a chance.
Anyways, big is ALWAYS better.

Economics of the materials it takes to make a big box, as well as getting more of the smaller ones on the same shelf area, again, economics.

I'd gladly pay an extra £2 or £3 for a nice big box with a 150 page instruction manual. Makes it feel more unique, somehow.
Hell, I even deliberately rushed out to the shops to buy the earliest possible version of the Civ 3 Conquests expansion pack, solely because it had 2 typos on it: "Mutliplayer" (Multiplayer) and "Civilazations"(Civilizations).

Small, it's easier to store them.

TBH, i dont care what the size of the box is, just the game that is inside and besides, i just unfold the boxes and put them into a filing cabinet.

and you can get coca cola on glass bottles still, u just have to know where to look

Yeah, small so its neat and tidy - those big boxes only get tatty....and i don't think i have EVER read an instruction manual past the key controls.

I keep all the games in their original boxes, but I still think smaller are better. If not for anything else its easier to fit more of em in a bag when taking em home .

@Taw

It must be hard work for you to remember to stay so consistent!

I prefer the big boxes because I've been brought up with them, but I don't mind either way really.

Homer: All right, pal: where'd you get the sugar for that tea?

Thief: I nicked it when you let your guard down for that split second, and I'd do it again.

The boxes come in a mixture of sizes now, and while larger boxes take up more space, but they stand out more on the shelf, and thus are more likely to be purchased. It's all about aesthetics vs. costs in the end.

I preferred the big boxes because they at least came in a CD case and you could easily place them in a rack, while the box got recycled.
Anyway, the new boxes are just trying to trick us into thinking we're buying DVDs, it's a conspiracy, I tell you!!
