Bobax is a newer trojan/worm. I can't remember reading anything about a "C" variant at this stage. Hmmm... *goes and looks* Nope, can't find it. Why not to to norton.com and check there? Sheesh! Do I have to do everything?

Fine, try this site; I'd summarise it for you and tell you what to do, but it's all there, and I'm feeling lazy .

If you are still having problems by tomorrow, I'll spend my four hours at work on helping you (18 hours from now). Of course, that would mean that I wouldn't be able to search for that stuff for Indy...

Edit: You didn't open any emails? That's ok; we believe you . I don't believe that the worm spreads that way anyway. By the way, do you have a firewall?

doesnt norton have an option to have it delete any virus it detects?

Post Tue May 18, 2004 9:23 pm

ok thanks.. anyways.. i think i've also got spyware on my comp now. if i check into some game forum this popup with a complete search on that game comes up.

and will check your linky in about 9 hours time. me gotta run.

and i don't have a firewall up.. i do ahve 2 antivirus, norton and AVG yeah.. but no firewall.. i seen that it blocks some stuff so i decided not to get it since virus getting to me is so goddamned rare. but how do i get them ? download.com? you got any suggestions on what to get ? (btw i dont got an ebay account so can't buy anything)

Post Tue May 18, 2004 10:11 pm

never, and i mean never not have a firewall! even though you think you may never get viruses, you should always have a firewall, even if you have AV's and adaware and other stuff.

EDIT: ur right esqie, some people never listen. you yourself said that (or was it taw O.o i forgot) people alwasy think they are invulnerable to viruses and not get the firewalls

Don't worry mate, it's a different virus you're posting about. I was just tired of all the threads dedicated to netsky.

Buy Kasperzky. The best anti-virus (and the cheapest) there is.
It made my pc virusfree!

thanks wizard, but did i not mention i can't 'buy' anything.. as i have no means of payment. you can buy it for me if you wanna

and i'm still waiting for firewall suggestions.. ones that won't block everything.

CLICK HERE. Apparently it won't damage your computer but it will use it to be a spam mule for spam mailers. Your comp could be used to spam the world with rotten junk

CLICK HERE I use a pay firewall so I've not explored free ones but here's one that seems to be pretty trustworthy. You ought to check with FinalDay, he seems to have a broad knowledgebase on freeware security solutions

You can use AVG anti virus software, which is 100% free if you use the free version, is constantly updated, and rather good. Alternatively - here is something one of my regulars told me:

Anyways - here's my lots recommendations from some time back:

Anti VIr software - free.

OR - this one (no link)

A spiffy program is being offered by E Trust call EZ armor. Go to the Microsoft update page and click on there three steps to protect your computer and on the anti-virus page you will find a linl to etrust. What is cool is the link allows you to try the software free with full support for a full year. The software itself is a suite of products that includes a anti-virus, email protecter, firewall and cast iron popup blocker all in one easy to use and customize package. I have been using it for about a month now and it is sweet. Besides free for a year is hard to beat

OR - use the one i use!!

AVG anti virus 100% Free

For firewalls, mine is a personal one done by Mcfee - or however its spelt - its also 100% free too......
There are lots of free firewalls, check them out.
You can also do online scans - which are always free

By the way - one of the best defences to ALL viruses is to simply stay up to date with microsoft updates - don't ignore them - check them!! Remember - viruses are usually exploiting holes in Windows that are FIXED in updates - as this is how they find out about the vulnerability!
Then - be wise - its called common sense - and don't open mail you don't know. I delete ALOT of emails that i don't know who they came from - mainly as i figure:
1) If it was offical - it would be done by phone/real mail
2) If it was from someone i know, i would know the email address - if not, then there is a reason i don't know them
3) The titles are never relevant to something - then its deleted
4) Attachments to check out that i am not aware about = deletion.

Simple as that

Grab a copy of ZoneAlarm or something. The free version is excellent (but the "Pro" version is better ). There is a freeware firewall called "Kerio" which is also supposed to be good.

Indy - Sophos hadn't updated the Virus Def. for Bobax when I double-checked yesterday .

Post Wed May 19, 2004 3:10 pm

Kimk, as far as firewalls, go, Norton is the best I have found, but you can try Zonealarm for free for 30 days. If you have Windows XP, you at least have a basic firewall. Use that for now until you can pick one up. Look around, Norton,US wise at least, has been as low as $19.99. Zonealarm also has a Free version. It is basic, but its better than no fire wall. Black ice defender, now Network Ice is a good one as well, but goes for $39.95 usd. Download .com does list other free or free to try ones, but I am not sure of them. Norton I have used and The Original Black Ice I have used and both are good. Hope this helps.

Actually, the XP firewall is full of holes and is essentially useless in my opinion. The "BlackIce" firewall was also the target of a specific worm a few months ago, so I am unconvinced of its security (even though it has been patched).

Post Wed May 19, 2004 5:33 pm

Black ice , for me, did decent blocking, but as it would give the IP addresses of any attempts to access ports, that feature became anoying. It has been 3 years since I used it, and yes, it needed an XP Patch. I have stuck with Norton ever since, though I still own a copy of Ice. There was a story, that ISS was trying to revamp it. Hopefully it will improve.

Kimk, which ever one you go with, you can use Noton's site to test it.
