Kennewick Man Now Ruled Not to Be Direct Ancestor of Local N
The skeletal remains known as Kennewick Man, found in Washington state a while back has been ruled by a three judge Federal appellate panel not to have
ancestral linkage with the local Native American tribes and, thusly, not subject to the protections of the Federal laws proscribing scientific analysis without the consent of the Nation involved (seldom given).
Point of interest: Anthropologists here believe that Kennewick Man represents evidence of a people present in North America that are not the direct descendants of the Asia-mainland based migration of peoples that is in evidence in most but not necessarily all Native American peoples (North and South).
Most current analysis postulates that Kennewick Man most closely reesembles a coastal people that originally inhabited Japan (Ainu).
The Ainu of Japan are/were a caucasoid-like people who had wavy to almost curly hair, deep set eyes that often were grey or hazel in color. There are no pure blooded Ainu in Japan today.
The significance of this find, if borne out by further scientific analysis (something that has been delayed by litigation for 15 years) is that the land bridge migration theory may not explain all of the peopleing of the American continents. That coastal, water borne migrations also took place even before the land bridge was exposed.
As it stands, linguists have always been puzzled by the highly variegated and unrelated Native American languages in evidence. Rather than being of one linguisitic family group with variations that have developed over time, Native American Languages are broken up into multiple families that have little or no relationship to each other.
