Wolfy needs an explanation on the Win Registry...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Wolfy needs an explanation on the Win Registry...

As the titel says, Wolfy wants to know what the Windows Registry is...

It's abit hard to explain, here's a tip, wolfy...

RUN
type in: regedit
enter

Thats the registry, now, you guys can tell him whats stored in there and what happens when you reinstall windows...

err....wolfy is confused by the registry:S

why the hell are you fiddling about in the registry? please don't unless you REALLY have to and even then just do exactly what you're told to do. Seriously, mucking about hamfistedley in here can trash your pc completely. This is the real heart of Windoze, it's (very crudely) a huge database that contains all the info regarding your hardware/software, all your apps and settings and drivers that Windoze needs to refer to in order to run.

if you're having registry issues then I suggest you either use System Restore to get back to the point before you had the problem(s) OR you get an decent registry hive repair utility like RFA or Norton Utils (for 2K/XP) or Registry Mechanic; it will be much safer for you as they do the registry check and repair automatically. If you really want to go mucking about in the registry then be my guest, but I'm not overkeen on helping you because I know what will happen (that's no criticism of you in particular, it's just an observation based on experience)

ffs - just leave the registry alone for now. Lost clusters can be fixed by any decent chkdsk type utility on boot; or are you talking about BAD clusters? which is physical damage to your hdd.

if you're having Windoze issues that need reinstalling, just do that and let the registry sort itself out. And you should keep a record of the dam' cd-keys. Are these cd-keys for games?

games and other programs.....and i forgot..does PSP8 need a CD key? cause if it does, ive lost it.....

It needs a activation code but I think thats fine.

Taw, if you need to reinstall windows, everytime you try to insert a cd it says "install game"

This can actually be fixed...you just have to launch the game without using autoplay...

I once had a time where I had to reinstall windows EVERY 30 DAYS, that was a pain in the ass...(if you ask, my pc didn't have access to the net so I couldn't activate windows )

Yes, registries are a pain in the ass, but theres a backup registry as well...I think you need to check the control panel, otherwise search for it in the Windows Troubleshoot (yes, that thing actually has a function)

Although, registry editing is fun, especially for Gangsters (if anyone played/plays it)...you can edit your starting money

this installing game thing is not uncommon, its because the links to the desktop and startmenu are gone, but if you cancel the autoplay you can still run the .exe from the game's install folder no prob, unless its a cd only game (unlikely)

Kendo, editing registries wiil NOT be fun for Wolfy. Walk before you can run, that's what I always say.

Well this is a role-reversal Taw; usually I'm the one warning people about playing with the registry, and you're the one telling me not to bother as they won't listen .

Post Wed May 12, 2004 2:46 pm

at least I've warned him, so if he goes twonking about changing registry entries without knowing what he's doing, my conscience is clear. I've been through online diagnosis and repairs with Wolfy before, haven't we Wolfy? if you'd like to have a go Esq, be my guest! Wolfy, Uncle Esqi is going to look after you now, be nice to him.

/runs away laughing.

sweetness sweetness I was only joking when i said, I'd like to smash every tooth in your head..

Damn! *Shouts* Come back Taw!

*Throws hands in air* What have I done to deserve this?!?! *Thinks* Oh, right .

Leave the Registry alone unless you absolutely have to remove something. I've had a painless experience so far, going into the registry. I've had a painful experience because I know what I'm looking for. If you don't know what you're looking for and delete the wrong thing, you could royally f**k up Windows.

Numero Uno rule of the registry: if you don't know what your doing, ffs don't touch it. IMO your silly for loosing your cd keys in the first place and should be punished accordingly by having to find them all over again.
