now now, don't get all excited, you'll make a mess. how do you know it will be TLR characters? hopefully it won't necessarily be sci-fi based (tbh I find the sci-fi genre a bit limiting these days, it's very formalist after all, not really allowing for freeform plays on words and ideas)

a set title and restricted to a specific length would be good, and encourages tighter writing that doesn't meander.

a sci-fi story doesn't need to be restricted to sci-fi. Just make a detective on mars or something, there's you r sci-fi with possibly a decent storyline
I could write a nice "free" story about someone in the FL universe, it's just a matter of prioritizing: What do you want to focus on, te techy stuff? then it'll be a Star Trek kinda story and cliché/limited. but if you focus more on the characters, leaving teh techy stuff a bit behind it could become a nice novel-ish kinda story. In teh end, you decide
