My favourite Sci-Fi "standalone" is :

"A maze of death" by Phillip K Dick

I highly recommend it.

My Favorite is Prey, by Michal Chrichton. It is about a man named Jack, who used a program called PREDPREY to keep AI focused on a single goal. However, in a nanoparticle production facility in Nevada, a psycopath named rickey used that program to become a literal predator. These nanobots were designed to form together and become an "eye" of sorts. It was thought to be designed for medical purposes, but it was actually a reconassance (Spelling?) project for the pentagon. But then it seems to evolve, and kills animals in the area, eventually hunting down humans. Then it all climaxes at the end and everybody lives happily ever after.

I like nearly everything by Jack Chalker. However, I have a collection of nearly 600 of sci-fi and fantasy books, many of which are very cool, so it would take too much place to list them all.
@ Taw: funny enough, I read "The Forever War" in three languages BUT the original - it's real cool to see the differences in translation. BTW, Taw, what's the original line for "vas te faire foutre"? I have a feeling it must be sth with the "F" word, but it's hard to tell, since all three versions differed so greatly that I tend to ascribe it to different levels of censorship.

it smacks of Gladiator I wonder if they based the movie off this book?

q possibly it was an inspiration, although it's set much later and is much more solidly based on real characters and events. read it years ago when I was a kid. However i think Gladiator (which i think is fookin ace, proper film that) was largely based on Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (film)

Winter Quarters is good as well. Rather moving actually especially when the Roman Army of Syria gets cut to pieces by the Parthians.

In fact, although aimed at teens, Rosemary Sutcliffe's series of the Eagle of the Ninth is a dead good read (based on the story of the Legio IX Hispana that marched north into Scotland and was never seen again)

who said Neuromancer? Rec I think. Highly recommended, if you liked the Matrix and Blade Runner, you will enjoy it.

zlo, it's supposedley the most derogatory French gesture, a fist up in the air levered on the other arm, and means "up yours!" in sentiment, but more literally "go f*** yourself!"
