I''m back... and need some help (for a change...)

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

I''m back... and need some help (for a change...)

Well hey again folks... sorry I've been gone for a while, and I apologise to anybody (if there is anyone) interested in Freelancer: Rebirth... So anyways, here's why I buggered off for a bit...

I was at college studying A levels in Mathematics (woe betide anyone attempting this and thinking it's as easy as GCSE Mathmatics...), Graphic Design, ICT (not as fun as it's cracked up to be...), and a BTEC in eBusiness (also not as fun as it's cracked up to be...). I was behind with most, if not all, of my coursework, add to that the fact that half of my lecturers never turned up, then add to that student absence, and then (just goes on doesn't it... just keep swimming... just keep swim... oops sorry... too much Nemo... M U S T . . . R E A C H . . . O F F . . . B U T T O N . . . lol sorry...) add to that that if and when lecturer and student met in the classroom (of all places), the lecturer attempted to backtrack to where he thought we were... and on and on and on...

So anyways, I am now working full-time at a local theme park, The American Adventure, in the bank and cash/change desks... so if you bump into Dale, a lad with spiky hair and a fan club (girls, and one gay guy... ugh!), well that's me... Today I had an aptitude test at Rolls Royce PLC in Derby, applying for a Fuel Cells Technician's position (I'm assuming it's in nuclear fuels... hee hee...), or a Mechanical Laboratory Technician's position, involving testing fuels... amidst other things like metallurgical analysis... So anyways, there's my life story... lol

I want to know two things...
1) Me and my dad want to share the bog-standard 576kb/sec BT ADSL. I want to have a permanent 24/7 Freelancer server for BETA testing the Rebirth MOD, and, if successful, a final Rebirth server... but my dad doesn't want his PC switched on all the time, and we want it wireless, so we're considering using...
A) A 200MHz bog-standard PC as a server
A wireless broadband router
So what do you techies reckon?

2) I want to learn PHP or ASP.net web scripting, so what would be the best program to use as a starter, and what books should I get to work from, or should I consider night school/college?

sod the American Adventure, tis cr*p anyway. Go to rolls-Royce, yoth, for total techie respect. T'riffic pension scheme, quality firm, all sorts of interesting stuff to learn and do, if my boy ever gets such an opportunity I'd make him go at gunpoint if i had to!

sorry, rambling.

1/ A. well what actual work is this server going to do? is it just storage, no progs running? what o/s were you planning to use? are there any server-side apps that would need more than 200mhz cpu? what about backups and stuff like that?

1/ B. you know the answer before you start. more trouble than it's worth, you need stability and rebiality for server purposes not flash gimmicks.

2/ Ask the webheads, i don't know sh*t about that stuff

How mant concurrent connections are you expecting on that server? 200Mhz will probably be enough, but if your mod becomes very popular you may inbox full of people complaining about the speed and reliability of the free service your providing. Might be an idea to limit them.

I'm with Taw on the router though, hardwire that sucker. I won't trust wireless for a long time yet.

im with taw and mustie on the router, Wireless, at the moment, is only goot for mobile laptops, hardwire the system with a good ol' CAT-5 cable though the walls.
Also, depending on the server O/S, server usage and demand, it might be an idea to up the CPU to 500MHz or get a dual system and leave the secondary port open until you find out how much CPU power the FLServer will need eg:
CPU port 1: 200MHz for data handling(local) and O/S functions
CPU port 2: FL server CPU

if the server demand dosent get too high, just leave port two empty, but if you get resource problems, use the secondary port and use that for FL server.

Hope that helps

welcome back cardy...! So you're working at the great bastion of ilkeston eh?! lol. good stuff. Do they still charge you per ride, or are you forced to buy a day ticket nowadays? (it was never worth buying a full day ticket previously because they only had 2 half-decent rides, not including the go kart track that is )

OT: Sorry, can't help ya
