Hmmmm.

It gets a little confusing . So if the Terabyte unit is a Raid0 array of, say, 2 500GB drives, does that take away from the point of this thread?

I must admit that I was more impressed when I thought that it was a single drive with a terabyte of volume. I wonder what the skinny on this really is

Meh. LaCie make some good stuff (supposedly), but I don't know if I'd get a TB HDD. Imagine trying to defrag it!

A question for those who have them, are the externals was enough to run programs off of or are they only good for back ups. Seen 80gb external for about $225.

Meh I already have 2 terabytes of memory, why would I want another one?

Final - External HDDs running on USB 2.0 or Firewire are mainly used for backups. You CAN run programs off them if necessary (my external HDD has heaps of tools on it), as the speeds are usually quite good, but there aren't that many BIOSes (last time I checked; it's been a while) that allow you to access the files off the HDDs at startup, so they are only of limited use in terms of using them to format another HDD, etc.

@All

The link I posted up earlier indicates that the LaCie is NOT a true terabyte volume but a raid 0 array yielding a terabtye. The thing weighs over 10 lbs!.

@Fd

IF you were on an Apple, the external drive would be recognized by the OS at startup as being part of the setup. LaCie originally was a purely Apple external peripherals maker. Since Apple never supported a warranty if an Apple user opened up the box, Applers had no alternative than to add peripherals by external means, formerly by scsi daisy-chain and now by firewire and I think also USB 2.0. Firewire was Apple's gig to begin with.

Indy, the reason I asked, was I have my main HD 60GB, a backup HD 40GB, both internal, but I was thinking of getting an external and install a OS on it, I own several copys of XP, all legeal too., and would put windows on the external as a emergency Hard drive incase mine ever failed. Have XP on the main drive too.

Late not to Esq, thanks for the info, that kind of explains things a bit. Need to put my glasses on more often. Thanks.

Final - No problem .

Nickless - Indeed, but it would be useful for storing database backups. The home user would have no need for such a drive.
