)The way I always see it is the next iteration or major design step of a card.
So current generation cards would be the Geforce 5900 and 5950 etc and the Radeon 9800XT etc. The next gen cards would be the Geforce 6800 and the Radeon x800.

I think that HL2, at least, will play on ATI 9's. Perhaps not all that snappily but , unless they've changed things because of the source code incident I remember the reviews specifically noting that it ran better on the pre-XT ATI 9's than on the nVidia 5's.
As I recall it was because the ATI 9's already handle Direct X 9 and the earlier nVidia 5's didn't.
