The Animal in Literature

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

The Animal in Literature

Inspired by Taw's and my musings on "Watership Down" etc, I was wondering what people thought about animals in literature, and why they work so well. There is a vast preponderence of literature containing animals, not to mention film and television. Why is this so? Why do animals often feature so prominently in such media? Related to this, I ask; Do you have a favourite text featuring animals? If so, what is it?

their apart of our lives, they don't need lines, other than Mr. Ed. and it adds a bit of variety to any story.

*Rolls eyes* Thanks a lot, Indy. With one post you've turned this from an interesting discussion about animals in literature, into a post about how they made Mr. Ed speak! You bastard!

Francis, the Talking Donkey

Tales of the Riverbank (original series)

Lassie (loved by all dogs, oddly enough)

the first book i ever read (that i remember) was called Ludo and the Star-Horse, really enjoyed it. I've always liked animals having voices in fiction, from Wind in the Willows, Watership Down, Farthing Wood (watched it with me sprogs when they were tiny, we used to watch the Hedghog family get run down over and over again - stupid hedghogs) and most recently Mononoké Hime and Spirited Away

I also really used to enjoy Oink! comic (pigs) especially Ham Dare, Pilot of the Future. I thought the scene where Ham reset prehistory back on course was rather moving with the little dinosaur shivering, saying "I'm cold, momma...."

As a kid I got a kick from Marvel Comics "The High Evolutionary" one of fav characters at the time.

I've always liked the animal in literature. Back when I was a young'un, I used to read a lot of Brian Jacques, and stuff like "Island of the Pines". I could never get into "Duncton Wood" though. I also used to watch stuff like "The Wombles", of course. You old(er) guys should remember that.

Forgive the oldness of it, But I read a book back in the 60's called "Eddie and Gardenia". Gardenia was a goat.

Duncton Wood was a series by William Horwood about badgers living in the (English?) woods. It was very interesting, if a little dry. Try it; you might like it.

Babe? Oh yeah; good eating!
