So Long Over Clockable AMD Chips, Hello Clock Lock!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

So Long Over Clockable AMD Chips, Hello Clock Lock!

Yes folks, AMD has been forced to go the way of Intel. Due to the dastardly deeds of unscrupulous resellers who go ahead and overclock and remark lower clocked AMD chips and sell them at the higher price, AMD has been forced to do the same as Intel and ship only clock-locked cpus.

The ONLY cpus now being shipped by AMD that will not be clock locked are the top of the line AMD 64 FX chips. All other AMD 64s also will be clock locked.

i never really got what overclocking was

*i removed the chain letter from my sig*

damn, now i stuck with this 2.0GHz thing, i wanted to turn it into a 2.2!

well, at least the consumers will be happy

Basically wolfy, overclocking is turning up the juice to your processor so you can crank more htz out of your chip. EG you can turn a 2.4Ghtz chip into a 2.8Ghtz chip with a few changes to your BIOS. The whole process can involve a lot of fine tuning to get the most out of your cpu, so it's best to get a detailed walkthrough/help guide before you go into it.

as if "locked" processor clocks ever stopped anyone. Am i going to have to get my graphite pen out again?

Post Thu Mar 18, 2004 2:22 am

Ah yes, the old graphite pencil trick. I always loved it when people used to do it on GeForce 4000 series cards, and used too many strokes and ended up frying their capacitors . Still, I had heard that AMD where planning this, because people overclocking an remarking chips has been going on for a while. Well, we can always get BIOS hacks and then ramp up the FSB...

whats graphite got to do with anything? i know it conducts electricity..

Post Thu Mar 18, 2004 3:45 am

i guess it would change the flow of electricity making it more efficent, dunno

Windows NT crashed.

silly boys, it does nothing of the sort. In the past we used to o/c locked cpus by "jumping" the cpu caches with a graphite pen.

Post Thu Mar 18, 2004 5:22 am

unfortunately the graphite pen may not work on these new chips
i looked into this before it was not as straightforward as i thought with these ones

It is all a matter of not being able to rely on the good faith and honesty of, apparently, a sizable number of these resellers. I don't think AMD intends it to be impossible for a techie to mess with it after its been bought I think they intend to make it so that the consumer will know how to make sure that he is getting the real deal.

Taw - Are you referring to me? By using a graphite pencil to draw lines along the side of specific capacitor(s), you were supposed to be able to increase the voltage and thus overclock some GF 4000 series cards. Am I wrong?

Indy - It is true, there are a lot of dodgy bastards out there. Most of them are either entirely online businesses, or small local computer shops.

no not to you Eskie although I never o/c'd a graphics card like that, but I di do a fair few low-end pents and K6's

Post Fri Mar 19, 2004 2:52 am

Taw - That's alright then . I remember the old pencil trick with the Thunderbird chips. I never used it myself. It makes me wonder whether or not I could have achieved more than 133MHz with my AMD K5-133...

Post Fri Mar 19, 2004 4:10 am

I used to hear all sorts of tales about people getting double clock speeds and higher with freon/glycol baths and all sorts of bizarreness, but the best I ever got was 133 from a 486-DX2-66, 650 from a K6-2-500 and 433 from a PII-300A. These new P4s are ace though, I chogged a Celeron 1.8 up to 2.66 and it's fookin steady as a rock.

I don't really want to go back to the graphite pen my eyesights not that good anymore.
