I can even remember an old 386 I had that had 50mg hdd and using disk compression got it to 125mb Lot of fun back then.

@Wolfy, all I buy is Western Digital. I've never had a problem with them and they're a good price.

There was a reformatting program I found a long time ago for floppy drives (this extra space on the HD reminds me of it). It actually created more room on a floppy disk from 1.44MB to 1.63MB. Not a huge difference, at the time it seemed like a lot more. But it was unstable and with the room, I sacrificed the number of files I could have on it. Weird. Anyway, I reformatted back to 1.44. Now I just bought a laptop that doesn't even have a floppy disk drive and a computer desktop with one that I'll probably never use.

Wolfy - WD are probably the best HDDs out there. What do you prefer? The IBM "Deskstar" series? Now called "Deathstar" because they were so faulty? I understand, I don't like Seagate, mainly because I have had so many problems with them over the years. I actually think that it was the computer shop now (dodgy bastards), and I don't shop there any more.

SS - There are a number of ways to fit more than 1.44 on an FD. Ah, I remember the days when a 5 1/4 disk was the best you could hope for in portable media... thanks a lot, now I feel old again!

OK. I'll 'fess up. I once owned a 286 @ 16Mhz. It had, at the time, whopping huge 128kb RAM and a 5Mb hdd and TWO 5.25" floppies. I was the envy of my peers. I got it for a real good price. It was a "Leading Edge" brand make. The video was 16 color VGA and I had a 11" color CRT, the kind where the wemfs projected out of the front of the monitor as well so that you had to buy a mesh or other type of wemf diffuser/neutralizer. Back then, no mouse needed. All was DOS.

My OS was.... and does any one remember this... DR-DOS by Novell and I used PC-Tools with PC-Tools' shell. Anyone remember shells?

fookin' loved Dos-Shell. still use it occassionally on some old dos machines.
