Controversial Video Games

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

@Esq

Zone - The Lucasarts adventure games; eg. Monkey Island 1,2,3, and Sam and Max etc, did not contain any death at all. They even make a joke about it in Monkey 3. The villain is, of course, dead, but no-one actually dies. Technically speaking
To what joke are you referring in MI3? I just played through that recently. But there is violence in the games, Max yanks their orders rather harshly out of a cat. He pushesa man dangling by his neck off a banister railing. You have to admit that is "very true to life." Also, there's no worse influence than learning to insult swordfight!

BTW, you didn't include MI4, have you not played Escape from Monkey Island? I think its the best one since the first.

Nope, when I think of controversial and video games in the same sentence, I think of a 40 year dirty old man playing a Powerpuff Girls game because he thinks Bubbles is cute.

Hey baby, my name is Guybrush Threepwood and I'm a mighty pirate.

I think he's referring to the scene where Guybrush appears to die (after drinking poison or mixing his drinks IIRC). You see the inside of the crypt and it appears that Guybrush is already dead and inside one of the coffins, the end credits even start to scroll up. Then Guybrush starts to call out complaining that "No one dies in a LucasArts adventure game!"

@Recuscant, oh yeah. I played through that game so fast I didn't remember all the jokes. On the other hand, I did actually kill Guybrush in Escape from Monkey Island. It was through the Marsh of Times where Guybrush gave himself a a skeleton key, a piece or rope, a chicken with a pulley in it, and a pistol. I used the pistol to shoot the other Guybrush, then when time came back on itself the original Guybrush shot my Guybrush!

Thanks, Rec; dead on. SS, I just posted in another thread about this, but from the reviews, MI4 wasn't supposed to be as good as the other MI games. Is it really good then? I can pick up a copy for $20 (AUD). Should I? I liked Grim Fandango though, that was great.

@Esq how I list the Monkey Islands in likability:

1. MI 1 - The original and great fare when Guybrush was at his most pathetic. Also the only one, in my opinion, that has a really great ending.
2. MI 4 - The newest and most cinematic. Lots of great jokes and terrific voice acting. Added note, you can question everything when speaking to people in many ways, meaning you rarely ever miss a joke if you don't want to.
3. MI 3 - Good voice acting, but game feels much slower in comparison as you are stuck on one island for a very long time. Some of the puzzles are so obscure that it either takes trying everything in 10 different ways or looking at a walkthru. Also, you can't question everything, meaning you have to continually replay the game to hear everything.
4. MI 2 - Not as funny as the first and nothing on the others.

The thing many people didn't like about 4 was that it was all Keyboard driven, no mouse click and point. The 3D workings of the game were very "controversial." But honestly when you get used to it, it makes no nevermind, at least not to me. In fact, I'd say over the course of years, I'll probably play MI4 the most.

However, you may not think the same as me. For instance I liked Grim Fandango and thought it was a clever game, but I didn't really get into it the way I was hoping to.

I only ever caught MI4 and after playing it, I was gutted at having missed the other 3. MI4 is definately worth the $20 Eskie, there is some killer jokes in there.

Post Sun Mar 14, 2004 12:39 am

Thanks for that, SS. I have been thinking of buying MI4 for a while, and I think I will. I have the other three, so I should probably complete the series. I am now downloading SCUMM-VM so that I can play MI 1 and 2; they no longer work with only VDMSound . Re. the keyboard interface, that's not really a problem. I would have preferred that GF had been mouse-driven, but once you get used to it, it is fine.

This thread is NOT about Monkey Island 4!

Great computer!
What kinda chip you got in there?
A dorito?

@Corsair, we were already done. But we did stay on topic in certain ways. I said what was more controversial, certain types of people playing certain types of games. And I showed there was actually a death in a LucasArts game, other than the Star Wars series. Then we talked about the "controversial" way to move the character with the keyboard instead of the mouse.

It was all about controversy, Corsair. We were on-topic the whole time. In fact, we discussed controversy in a way that was not ad nauseum.

Yeah, Corsair! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

On the advice of my esteemed colleagues, SS and Mustang (Thanks!), I will be purchasing the game in question this afternoon. Then we'll see how good it is. I'm hard to please...

Well, reading this has changed my view on video games.I'm still trying to figure out why Halo was rated M.I just have the demo(cuz i have no money and I'm underage but I'm mature enough to play it without becoming a lunatic).Maybe it's like starcraft(you can't go through starcraft without hearing one 'offensive' word).
I just realized I coud have been playing Freelancer in the 30 mins. it took me to read this forum...err I mean thread.

WTF is going on about people complaining about FPS and violent games where the REAL killers are mmorpgs. Kids are getting addicted to them and are turning into nerdz0rs. tsk tsk tsk.

Also I think a worse problem is the swearing kids pick up from movies and tv and stuff / other kids that have picked it up from movies and tv and stuff or from other kids who have picked it up from movies...etc

Post Tue Apr 06, 2004 2:44 am

i think we all know who the REAL problem is here, and its the parents.
Bad fecking parenting is the root of a child growing up to be an insane gun totting psychopath who went out and left 2 year old johnny in front of doom and a stack of 18 year old dvds and thought "what the hell, tv was wholesome when i was little, and this way i dont need to raise my kids, i'll just check in on them in 15 years"

Post Tue Apr 06, 2004 3:20 am

no ARCON kids can obtain any game without the parents knowing it. From other friends who burn it, off the net, etc. At my school there used to be heaps of year 7'ers running black market burnt cd trading operations.

Post Tue Apr 06, 2004 4:37 am

nope, archie's right, its bad parenting all the way....its too easy to blame problems on media.

For god's sake, I'd seen 3 of the nightmare on elm street movies, pretty much all of the friday the 13th series, the thing, night of the living dead, the texas chainsaw massacre, a clockwork orange and an assortment of really sordid porn by the time I was 14....also I'd ventured into the world of "beat 'em up" gaming by that point too...but I didn't turn out to be a gun toting psycho, and I have my parents to thank for that.

Its got f*** all to do with media, its got EVERYTHING to do with parenting and heriditary aggression.
