Damn, computer not powering up at all

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Damn, computer not powering up at all

A couple days ago, after shutting down my computer, the floppy drive clicked every few seconds. It would just click every once in a while and i thought it was nothing so i just went to the back of my computer and flipped the master power switch off and then back to on and then back to off (dont ask why i just felt like it). Then i left and came back the next day.
I pressed the power button at the front to turn it on and since the switch is on off obviuosly it wont turn on and it didnt. So i went to the back and flipped it on. Then i pressed the power button again and i can hear the computer turning on. The fans started up and the hard drive spun but after 2 seconds, it all died. It sounded like any other normal boot up but then it just stopped and ever since then i cannot turn on my computer. I tried the switch in the back again and kept pressing the power button. Nothing. Nada. No power at all. And yes, i checked the power cables and the surge protector and they are all working.
I figured it was the power supply so i went and bought a new one. I got home and installed it and the nothing happens again. So im guessing its the mobo.
I tried blowing some of the dust out of the system and maybe it would magically work but no.

Anyone have any suggestions? Do i need a new mobo? My 8 year old compaq is still alive and doing great. This computer that died is only about 4 years. Sigh...

my rig:
piii 450
Asus P2B-F 440BX
128MB SDRAM
250W power supply (old one)
300W power supply (new one)
some cd drives and yah.

Oh yah, I went on Ebay and found some old compatable mobos i could use. I put a bid for the Asus P2-99, and two Asus P2B mobos (one is rev 1.10 and the other is 1.12)

Side question: Anyone know if the rev1.10 can support PIII 450s? Its the original Katmai core kind.

This happened to me a while ago: Open up the computer case, and clean out all the dust was the solution.

sounds like you mightve fried something (obviously not the PSU), my advice:
get a multimeter, set it to whatever voltage you PSU is, and check each component for conductivity, moving outward from PSU interface ports on the Mobo, hopefully you will be able to isolate the fault and bypass it(that would, at best, require you to put the mobo in to have the part replaced, at worst, requiring you to jerry-rig a new part parralell to the dead one), or failing having to buy something new.

but i may be a new experience for you to try one of the new Intel Pentium 4-X with HT, heard they go about 3.6 Ghz

i reckon someone should make a new forum, a technical forum

every day there seems to be someone else with a tech problem or question

What once was FL2, and now is ... *hmm what is it?*

shame poor EB I got a solution, throw it in water and wash it...then it wont work at all and you can buy a new one

The more I learn , the more I get to know, the more I get to know, the more I forget, so why should I learn?

Hmm .. sounds like it needs some oil. Open the powercase .. pour in 1 liter of Castrol GTX. Close up the computer. Take to the highest building you have there. Chuck it out of the window. If you found that the oil leaked out of the case .. the case probably needs a new oil seal.

unfortunately it sounds like you've picked up a dose of Stinger's problem, EB. If you've checked all your power connections are ok and changed the psu, then I'm afraid it's motherboard, and there's nowt you can do but replace the thing.

Now I know you're not exactly flush at the moment, so tell me your motherboard make and model and I'll tell you if it's still readily available for replacement or what you can do instead. Remember that if your mobo is more than a couple of years old it's the devil's own job to find a like for like replacement. Hoever i might be able to sort you out with something if you're really stuck.

sorry i see you did put the specs at the bottom of your post. if you can't find anything to suit, well I don't have an Asus but i do have an Abit 440BX that takes Socket 370 ppga & fc-pga cpus, so it will be fine for you. No cost, just pay for me postage to Canadia, seeing as youre stuck. I would recommend if you've got some cash to upgrade properly though. 4 years is reasonable, truly, for a computer to last. I change my mobo/hd/cpu/mem/vcard every year.

@Taw.

4 years max? Really? I guess I'm pushing my luck then. I'll be going into year 4 by the end of this one. Well I guess I'll just tread lightly and hope my rig lasts. If not, I guess I'll have to replace it regardless of whether 64-bit has become a practical reality.

well you have the curse of WinME to contend with, of course.

Go on, Ed, that's a free shot for you!

I posted this prob on Ars as well. Check it out

No, i dont have a multimeter and i dont want to bother with that. If its going to be the mobo, then ill just replace the entire mobo.

And that would be great, Taw! How would i pay for the postage?

Dear god!!! EB may have to replace his legendary PII 450. Personally I think it should be donated to the TLR museum as one of our holy relics.

All hail the Pentium 2 !!!

Paypal would be best, but I'll take what I can get. Mail me, EB, and we'll sort summat out. Seeing as you're a povvo these days I'll prob chuck in a 1ghz+ cpu as well, i'm not gonna use it for anything. Got shedloads of this stuff lying around

that arstechnica should be named arse-technics. Wot a bunch of amateurs. 1 guy out of the entire thread who had the answer correct. Are all the threads full of such rubbish? You stick with us EB, we'll keep you on the straight and narrow, we're pros.

Eskie if you read this you gotta follow EBs link to that thread, just for a laugh.

Unplug the mobo's power then plug it back then if that doesn't work take it apart and put it back together. This sounds stupid but it has worked for me and my Intermitant computer.

Edit: Why am I not banned from TLR yet?????

Taw - Me? Why would I read a post about someone having computer problems? That link was amusing, especially since I read the news on Ars every couple of days. *Shakes head* The MB battery not allowing the computer to start up? The standard CMOS battery only runs at 3 Volts! Classic .

yeah most of their solutions didnt make sense to me.

I dont have a credit card or anything so i can do paypal well, ill see...see if i can borrow someone else's to use lol. but thanks a lot taw. ill email you in a bit.

And mustang, its a >>>P3<<< not a P2
