Video Capture

Hi guys, I'm looking for a bit of advice and hope that somebody here might be able to help....

About a year ago I bought a custom machine and added what I thought was a ATI Radeon 9000Pro All-in-Wonder. For those that don't know, that particular card apart from providing very nice graphics also allows for video capture from an s-video source, something that I wanted to play around with when I got the time. Anyway, last week I finally got around to playing with it and discovered to my horror that the **** that put my machine together had given me the bog-standard Radeon 9000Pro, and not the All-in-Wonder (which I payed for!!), which only has TV-Out and not S-Video in. I'm absolutely gutted...I never checked at the time because I was preparing to move house and was very very busy, I was just glad the machine turned up before my move. Stupid mistake, I feel like an idiot now. Anyway, that aside, I still want to do some video capture - in fact I have a client lined up expecting it! So I've been looking into my options....

Ideally I'd like to buy an Osprey card - I know these are the best because I used to work for an internet broadcast company and they tried pretty much every encoder on the market - however, I'm on a very very tight budget at the moment so its simply not an option.

I checked out the ATI website yesterday and found a card called the ATI TV-Wonder Pro which slots into your machine to complement the 9000Pro and gives all of the extra features of the 9000Pro All-in-wonder....sounds perfect to me, and it fits my budget (about £50)....however I can't find any for sale anywhere apart from the US Ebay, and the only ones there are the VE version which is the older, less cool, version. Does anyone know anything about this card? Pros? Cons? Is it still around? Is it new and hasn't been released yet?

My only other alternative appears to be the Belkin VideoBus II USB, which is a bit cheap and nasty but it might do the trick. I'm looking for a capture device that will accept an analogue source such as a VHS or TV signal - any suggestions?

X-Vision 814ESW 1, 4, or 8port analogue inputs for sound and video, it's wot I use meself for non-digital sources. You need W2K or higher to work it proper.

it's getting like pro-exchange round here!

lol...our plan is working muuwwahahahaaa ...

thanks for the tip, I'll check it out in a mo. do you know someone who uses it then? yourself?

I should have also mentioned that I run XP and an SB Audigy 2, so if the capture card only takes Video and not sound, its not a problem.

yes i use it myself for security cam inputs, as you know I have several cameras protecting Party Headquarters. The latest ones do take audio inputs on a daughterboard. Not a bad product really, but you won't find it in the shops.

When you said you can't get in the shops you weren't exaggerating! I can't even find it on a decent web search! I've found something that looks like mpeg c++ software....but that doesn't really solve my analogue capture problem. I've still got all of the pro digital mixing software (not really "theft" as such, the company went bust and I "acquired" them as part of my non-existent redundancy package ), so all I need is a half-decent capture card that will work smoothly with the Radeon 9000Pro.

don't you fret, me boy, I'll sort you out where to get them from. Expect an email in the next day or so. Imight even have a 1-porter lying around with drivers too, but I need to check.

Just exactly how many favours do you owe me now?

lol. free website sir? hehe

seriously though, thankyou, I'd be forever indebted...I'm sure the day will come when I can repay you somehow...what goes around and all that just let me know...

Yes Taw, it's good karma . It's odd actually, because my Radeon 9700 is not an "All-in-Wonder" (stupid pun by the way), but has video-out and came bundled with an S-Video cable.

grommers, try this m8,, me e-mail's down for the night

y3k pci analogue video cards I use these myself. No particular reason, they're ok, just what was available at the time. You could also try Wildcat, they make 'em specially for the multimedia pro - expensive, grand a shot and more.

also there are some good deals on eBay if you search under "analogue video capture cards" inc. some very professional looking kit.
