Some people, however do not choose at random. They choose whoever sounds like the best person to lead the country. If they choose the best candidate (in their opinion), then they think they are taking steps towards making their country better. However, the public is, in fact, not entirely made up of people who know how to make good decisions. Some of them are uninformed and althought they think they are doing the right thing, it may be just the opposite.

In my opinion, all forms of politics are flawed in some way. When they create a perfect political system, I'd like to hear about it . And don't say communism. Communism failed miserably.

If democracy truly worked, then those elected, be them president, senate, house ect, they would be neutral and would represent the majority. But in fact, they often choose their own view. Rome, under the senate, was a better model of democracy. It is an ideal choice, but in application, it seems to break down quite a bit.

Think of Democracy this way :

Year 1 : Person/s elected, keeps all promises, keep public happy.
Year 2 : Starts to slack off, public are coming to awarness of his/her policies.
Year 3 : REALLY slacks off, public moan, they ignore, generall well-controlled dis-satisfaction on the publics side. Start to make STUPID decisions.
Year 4 : Need to be re-elected, so make public happy

Repeat and serve.
(I live in a democratic country by the way, so no anti-governmentism here)

Thats just it though, "Keep the public happy". Sometimes they might know best but the public don't like it, so they won't do it.
