Virus

I just got an email from "[email protected]" saying:

"A new worm spread via online gaming!
You must change your internet configuration!!
see:"

and attatched to it was a file "set_config.bat"

Hotmail automatically blocked the attattchment, but I'm not sure if it's a virus or not

Just now I got another message in German from "[email protected]":

"Sie Lesen richtig!!
Das sind die neuen, noch Geheimen Pläne unserer super tollen Helden Politiker.
Lesen sie dazu mehr auf unserer Seite und Stimmen Sie ab,
ob man so einen Irrsinn unterstützen soll oder nicht."

Attatched to this was another file: "Abstimmen.cmd" which once again hotmail blocked

Any help would be appreciated

Don't do anything, it's just viruses being bounced around email networks from infected computers. Just be cautious of what you open and keep your virus pattern files up to date. If one address keeps sending you the same message ad nauseum just jam it on your block sender list and it'll get auto deleted when it hits your inbox.

So you receive an email from an unknown source, and you are even considering opening it??!? *shakes head* We have a live one here, Taw . DO NOT open attachments from anyone you do not know, and I recommend not opening them at all unless someone you know has told you that they are sending you something. Furthermore, DO NOT download any attachments that are executables; (eg. ActiveX, .js, .bat, .com, .exe, etc, etc), as you are just asking for trouble.

Sorry to go over the top, but I feel very strongly about this sort of thing; I bet you couldn't tell .

I wasn't going to, I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on it

Demouser: I have no wish to join the play, but rather to see it enacted. My only concern is to avoid having the lands of Microsoftia bare down on myself.

Spammers: have C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\MUSIC\music_failure.wav playing back in ther head when they visit TLR

Mods have C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\MUSIC\music_victory.wav playing in their heads every time they remove Spammers

*wipes brow* I'm glad to hear that pSYCHO!

It is probably just another generic worm. It's not MyDoom or DoomJuice, so it doesn't appear to be a "new" worm, but time will tell.

Esq you can warn people till you're blue in the face; until their pc is rendered uselss and an expensive stone, they'll never learn.

Well it's official; Taw is more cynical than I, and expects even less from the average computer user than I do. Still Taw, I live in hope that someday someone will listen to me, and make one less person who ends up infecting the people in their address book with another easily-avoided worm. Call me an Idealist if you wish. I can take it .
