Anime

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Anime

Any one know of any good anime? I think its ok, but have yet to see too many stuning stuff. there are the classics, but anything obscure you know of?

If life is unfair how come I haven't won yet?

i watched Wonderful Days the other day, fooking awesome.
My fave ever is "Blood: The last vampire" i think its one of the most awsome things ive ever seen and im a big fan of Samurai X, theyre worth a look. I heard Cowboy beebop is really good but im yet to get my hands on any because im poor and out-of-touch. Im sure Taw will sing you many a song of Japanimation any second with a much longer list for you, no doubt involving the names of directors you'll never remember off hand and im still questioning his ability to do so.

hmmm...let's see...
there's a good one out there called mighty space miners, and ya, cowboy bebop (it rocks, i have all the episodes on disc), akira, if you did'nt know about that yet, venus wars (the original, not dubbed), ninja scroll, and that's about all i can dredge out of my head right now...

what is it you're looking for? name any good anime is a bit vague; what kind of things do you like?

if I had to recommend anything just for the sake of it, I'd say few people could go wrong with the collected works of Studio Ghibli, I don't see how anyone can dislike Laputa, Castle in the Sky, or Mononoké Hime, or Spirited Away.

if you're familiar with Ghost in the Shell, and liked it, try Patlabor: Mobile Police and Patlabor 2. Mecha but very deep and political.

Cyborgs, Battle Angel Alita or Spriggan (i fookin luv Spriggan, it's ace!)

if you like magic and legends, then Dark Myth is nice n meaty. for more sex n violence, try Tokyo Revelation or Wicked City, or silly Urotsokidoju(?)... oh I can't be bothered, I think it's cr*p but people still buy it. Legend of the Four Kings isn't bad.

for Mecha, then I'd suggest Detonator Orgun or any Macross, even Gundam Wing!

adventure series, Escaflowne* followed by Neon Genesis Evangelion followed by Martian Successor Nadesico followed by Blue Submarine No.6 followed by Record of Lodoss War

*luv Escaflowne too

Samurai and Ninjas, go for Ninja Scroll and Ninja Resurrection: Revenge of Jubei, oh and Ninjai (that's on the 'Net)

if you like being totally confused, try Serial Experiments Lain. Actually i was just bored, but it has a strong following amongst the young.. I think it's pretentious and directionless. Apparently if you don't "get" it, you're thick and won't even understand the Matrix. Boll*cks.

if you like watching utter piffle, then hey! buy yourself any Love Hina or Ah! My Goddess.. why was this bland mindless rubbish ever made, and who exactly buys it?

You might also like Wings of Honnemaise, it's an unusual film that's rather slow but with a great ending. The Cockpit is an unusual little number. Read or Die is quirkily entertaining too. Also get a look at 3X3 Eyes, Golgo-13:The Professional, Armageddon (not Bruce Willis) CyberCity Oedo, Shadow Skill, and Blue Sonnet

finally Animatrix, if you ain't seen it, you've got to. Brilliant.

there are certain others i could recommend to you but you're prob not old enough to watch those!

and please don't call it "japanimation" because it's a really crass and insulting term for what is in effect an art form. Nor is it "manga" because that's wrong, those are comics. it's "animé"

That was the list of movies you should see. Now the one you should not see is Gasaraki. Man that sucked. The mech and the battle scenes were cool, but the apparently tried mimic Evangelion's Judeo-Christian mythical backgrounds and translated it into a Japanese-Buddhist one.

The best was Final Fantasy in computer animation, but my favorite is an abscure one called Kabbuto. It's still out there for rent. Bad part is it's subtitled.

Why is subtitled bad? you can read can you? Subs are the best - it preserves the original taste. Only cartoons for illiterate 2-year olds should be dubbed.

Post Tue Feb 03, 2004 5:42 am

subtitles = teh win, dubbing can kiss my arse.
For the record, i hate Evangelion. I'd watched episodes 1 to 24 with no problem, i was properly psyched and loving every minute (except Rei who, without a doubt, pissed me off in pretty much every bloody scene) then i saw the last two episodes and threw up my lungs. Thats not an ending, its not even an episode, hell it stretches to even justify the worst trip on acid EVER. It has **** all to do with ANYTHING. Its like the writer dude got up one morning and thought "the fans really love this show and cant wait for the conclusion which is great. But i HATE my fans so i will make an abombination of a finale to teach them never to put their faith in me again". If that ****off works again i will die a little inside, i know if i ever met him i will punch him in the head....repeatedly. In FACT im going to go hunt him down, Taw, make a note, "Punch Hideaki Anno repeatedly in the face".

As for Japanimation, wtf is wrong with that? loads of people say it. it doesnt make it less of an "art form" than saying "anime", just like saying "video games" isnt detracting from the art form of gaming. You need to lighten up and stop being a ponce about it, as long as people enjoy it, whats wrong with how they label it?

A freind just showed me FLCL which is weird, but I like it.

Spirted away, castle in the sky and Monnonoke ( is that how u spell it?) are all fabulace. Bebop is a classic and I've heard of nija scroll but never seen it. animatrix is something i wach at least once a month. anyone seen metropolis?

on subtitels I think there fine, on some movies thinke Metropolis there bad, cause there is so much to take in in the movie, but other than that they can be good to perserve the Original feeling.

If life gives you lemon use them to squirk lemon juice in people's eyes and cheat.

I watch the Ruroni Kenshin series sometimes. Its pretty good. Lots of action. And some funny charecters for comical relief. The main charecter, Hemoura kenshin, is a former manslayer who now is a wanderer. however, many of his former enemies do not know this. He was called Battousai the manslayer for a reason .

Ohhh! Beu-tiful! Preeety! How do I blow it up?

well what if folk just called it "cartoons?" wouldn't you feel insulted watching animé you love and someone me says "watching cartoons again?" same difference. besides you're not American, japanimation is an americanism coined to convey a rough idea of animé to an audience generally unfamilar with it.

Metropolis, looked great, very predictable story shame
Gasaraki - complete fonk.
Ayanami Rei, my least liked character in Evangelion.

subtitles - by far my preferred choice, except in Ghibli stuff when the voice talents are top quality.

always try to go with subtitles movies. sometimes you may have to watch it twice, just in case you missed something, but the storyline is realatively virgin. with subtitles, a lot can be lost in the translation.
for instance, when i first saw akira, i saw the dubbed version. i ended up having to see it three times before i felt i understood the whole story. then i got the original subtitled version, and with one sitting, i read pretty much what the dubbed version did'nt hack up, and what i had surmised from the rest.
this movie and others are the exception, not the rule. there are a few dubbed movies that are actually pretty good, as far as translation goes...
but i begin to babble...
thought i'd jump into the pool again...

i'd have no problem with calling them cartoons. i have no problem with labeling myself a geek and saying i play video games either. I think people who like to sperate themselves from something they are not totally comfortable with. I watch cartoons, i play with toys etc. but yeah, Japanimation is a crap word anyway, i just wanted to test the water with it, then poke you about it. No biggie.

IRT Metropolis: Awesome film, loved it all and yeah, a little predictable but not so that i saw the ending coming.

Well that's a relief. I find J*&%nimation to be offensive.

The bad part of subtitleing, is it does not alwas match the action on the screen. In Kabbuto, it distracted a bit. Like Crouching tiger, hidden dragon. The dub was better in following the movie. Reading is fun if all I'm doing is reading, but trying to read and watch a movie is distracting.
