Veral, I can help you. But I don't have the time to do it for you. Email if you need help with something specific....or any "oh god where do I start" sort of questions.

BTW The first thing you should be thinking about is exactly how your navigation is going to work...forget design...forget page position...sit down with a pen and paper and get your navigation down to a tee. Make sure everything in your site is within 2 clicks of everything else. Make sure your main top level navigation has less than 8 categories and then work from there. Once the navigation is flawless the rest will be easy....trust me, I've been doing this for years.

@ Grom, I am slowly improving now - lol, taking my time - check out the site though

V guy - i have tons and tons of old pages that you can use if you want.
It goes from frames, index, nav bars, menus - lots of stuff. I can just ship you over my "old" site layout (the one before last - its no its 5th layout now ), some stuff might not work, but some might

Thanks Gromit, I'll do that, and I'll email you if I need anything... and thanks agian ^-^

@chips - hey mate, looking much better! Just a couple of comments though - your background colour change at the beginning is a nice touch, but its slow, it took almost 20 seconds to work on my machine. Is it necessary? If you really like it, can you speed it up at all? I presume its a seperate page from your main home page....have you got lots of meta tags in it? I'm thinking that its not very search engine friendly thats all. Also, minor detail, but I would consider top left aligning your site (let me know if you don't know how to do that)...your top bar is using up space that could cause problems with lower resolutions. As per usual chap, if you need any help drop me a line.

@veral - no probs. just drop me a line if you need anything. what software are you using to build your site?

Thanks Gromit

lol - i was trying to get it so that it would kinda "fade into view" from greenish to the black background, revealing the text. I was playing was all Will quicken it up. However, it isn't quite what i was after, but kinda close

As for top left alignment? Not sure what that means - so give us a clue please :p

My only problem is that whatever i do, the only stuff i know how to do is in html. The java comes from script sites . Same with the php as well - lol. However, when i get bored i start to fiddle with it. Just wish i could do flash and other stuff, but what the hell i would use it for i don't know

i have one question. how can i get it so that the music comes in with the fade of background or not? Cause, the WHOLE point of fade in background was that it would reveal everything as it played music.

As it is, it fades, then loads the rest of it up, and starts the music about 1/10th second later. Not the desired effect lol. Will change the time, cause it annoys me as well - but i got broadband, so its quicker........i forgot bout 56kers or worse...oops

that depends whether you want to be ethical or not! if you don't care then it can be done with javascript - there's free scripts out there - but if you do care then scrap the idea altogether or go with a "flash intro" sort of thing. The reason I say that is for a number of reasons -

1. some people have javascript turned off on their browsers, which means they'll never make it to your frontpage
2. search engines hate javascript
3. I looked at it on a 2Mb connection - if I was on a 56K connection I would have given up way before the home page loaded.
4. Old browsers won't cope with it
5. Neither will Macs (very well anyway)

Best practice is to always go straight into the homepage, leave the fancy stuff til later...get them looking at your homepage first so they actually have something to stay for.

And to answer your question about music - nowadays flash is the most efficient way of streaming audio on the cheap. I can give you a few pointers if you want so let me know.

PS. I kinda finished that site I was showing you ages ago. They cut the budget in the end so I got a bit slap hazard with it - the content's boring and I couldn't be arsed to put "finishing touches" to it etc. But its so-so....I was quite happy with the image galleries in the "events" section....but not much else there to be proud of. WARNING: The music on the site is god-awful, but thats not my fault, they're a "drum and bass promoter" so they provided the *cough* "music" *cough*....I'm not supposed to advertise the link, but they treated me a bit sh** so sod em...have a look.

I can lend a hand if needs be - I am doing a module at Uni this semester using Dreamweaver, and I know HTML script. Have a basic grasp of both standard and animated gifs. However, I don't know JavaScript or how to make Flash animations.

@arc

nice, im crap at flash, what bits are you?

you mean bits of that site? the whole thing's me. I was provided with a low res pink gif which was supposed to be their logo (cleaned it up and re-did it for them) and a load of crappy low-res images (eg. the stuff in the gallery)...I had to use every photoshop skill I've ever learnt to clean them up and create those backgrounds! I don't like the nav...they didn't like my original version and drew something out on paper which I recreated for them....but apart from that its all my work. Its a shame really, it could have been a really sexy site, but they kept throwing extra content at me which screwed up the nav and all in all they were pretty much @rseholes to me so I didn't put much effort in near to the end.

So you can do PHP? Thats something I usually leave to the programmers but I'd love to have a little time to learn it myself. Actionscript in flash isn't far from it...you should give it a look...a creative mind like yours and a little programming skill can go far with Flash.

Post Tue Feb 03, 2004 10:30 am

Arc, did you mentioned PHP (of course, what else ?) I could learn you a litle for a fee of 0 dollars or whatever

Gromit - lol, I still have the link to the version on YOUR webspace that i kept from when you showed us last - hehe, i kept checking back to see if it got updated, but of course, you moved it (I checked about a week ago now).

Flash - i am interested in learning flash of course, but what do i need to start? Everytime i try to find something - i get taken to macromedia website where they ask for a mere 700 quid or so for thier packages!!!!!!!

i have now got Photoshop (version 7.0) - and no idea how to use it.

basically, i know about sites being functional and all, but i am one for piling them full of gizmo/gadgets sorta thing.

Basically..........I want flash!!!!
