No. It is not BS. There are core samplings of volcanic flows in Hawaii that occurred some 700,000 years ago which pretty much is a record of the last polarity flux that occurred. Core samplings of lava flows that are younger than 700,000 years old all register the current north/south polarity.
Here's the show I saw
But I think I got the amount of time it will take to happen mixed up. It might not happen for a century or two from now (so you were right Blade
).... but we're definitely over due.
Click here for latest model of how it happens
also
and here for how they dig up the evidence
There are way more sites, of course.
@Taw
Both. Current thinking is that the weakening you know of are symptomatic of an eventual polarity reversal where the magnetic field will flop ends of the N/S axis.
This is indicated in the geological record, again from core drillings of variously aged lava flows.
@Arcon
Well, it won't be the end of the world but do us all a favor and put on a clean t-shirt.

Also, the periodic cycle is more like 250,000, not 200,000 years. Mars (now being explored
) may hold some clues to what is happening on Earth as Mars used to have and then disastrously lost its magentic field.
