Sound Card: Reccomendations Please

Lately it seems that I spend more time listening to music on my computer than doing anything else, and so I have been thinking about upgrading my sound card. The problem with this is that I really have no idea of what is good and what is not, so I thought I would ask the experts here for advice.

I would like to be able to connect a set of good speakers, or perhaps a surround sound setup to my computer. Price is not a problem, as I have a birthday coming up and can probably convince my parents to help my pay for the card, and I plan to move the card to a new computer when I get one, so I want to get a good one.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I use the Audigy 2 for professional mixing - and I really can't see myself changing it in a hurry....

I too, have a Live! card. It does the job, but does not support EAX 2 and 3. Version 3.0 is the latest incarnation, and offers great 3D sound. One option for you if you are into music composition is "Hoontech". Their cards aren't too expensive, and they are professional quality. There are some Hercules carda around, but they are not as good as Creative cards. The Audigy 2 is probably the way to go, but I'd avoid the Audigy 2 ZS. It has support for 7.1 surround, but who has (or needs) that many speakers?

Well, you could ignore us all and go for something else such as an on-board chip supporting AC97, but then that would defeat the whole point of asking us, wouldn't it?

Personally, I'm waiting for the new card the "Audigy 3" or whatever it will be called. It will probably support the next version of EAX. After all, we don't want to be left behind in the IT race, do we?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm looking into an Audigy 2.

An Audigy 2? What made you choose that? I don't remember anyone mentioning it .

It's a fine choice. As I said, I'm waiting for the next "big thing" in sound cards. Maybe I'll go PCI-Express too!!!
