Master & Commander

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Master & Commander

I watched this quite some time ago. Did anyone else? I think it got drowned between ROTK and Last Samurai. In many counts, I feel it's superior to the other two! I have not read the books, but I loved every single second of the movie - I liked the way the doctor spreads sand on the floor to prevent blood making the floor slippery, I loved the tactics Lucky Jack used against his enemy, many appraisals to the wonderful string duo, I loved the young midshipmen (not in the Michael Jackson way , I loved the way Jack wears his hat, and the list goes on -showing a great depth of research and true to the books.

I really couldn't find a single blemish on this movie but I can understand why it's less of an epic compared to ROTK and Samurai. I hope they still win some Oscars and hope that ROTK won't hog all the prizes.

Of the three movies, I agree it is the best. But it's far from one of my favourites. Though I will see it one more time and then that will be it.

I really enjoyed it, and i did post here about it when I saw it last month. I'm rather a fan of Big Russ and find him very easy and enjoyable to watch acting, he's very natural and understated. Also the film was very detailed and well-researched as regards to seamanship and period naval life.

The problem was for me that I'd seen it all before, in Hornblower, Mutiny on the Bounty, Moby Dick and all the other watery films I've been watching since I was about 4. That's why Last Samurai has the edge for me event hough I vastly prefer Russ to Tom, because it was different. And ROTK is completely diffeerent and can't be included in the comparison.

never read the Master & Commander books, I'm not a big fan of naval fiction. I have just finished Nathaniel Philbrick's "In the Heart of the Sea" about the sinking of the Nantucket whaler Essex by an enraged sperm whale, the story that inspired Moby Dick. cracking read, couldn't put it down.

I really wanted to catch this one but never got around to it and will prolly just pick it up on DVD when it hits the shelves. I love Russ as an actor, but he is an egotistical tosser in regular life. I'm yet to see 6 months go by when Russ doesn't make an ass of himself in public, hopefully his new missus will knock some sense into him.

I enjoyed it immensly, both times! The books ought to be great.

the ending was the best with alot of blood

Post Sun Feb 01, 2004 5:34 pm

Yes, there was lots of blood, but it was realistic. If a hundred (guess) people get slain anywhere there's gona be alot of blood. What I liked was how the cannonballs really did some damage! I imagine they would, 10-16 lbs of lead(?) moving at that speed. You didn't see that in Pirates of the Carabean. I also liked the charictor of the doctor. Imagine one or two people who must be able to treat any malady on a ship with 200 people and poor living conditions. Not to mention battle injuries.

The doc was an educated man and refined in taste, and usually when you put people like that in the middle of a swarm of commoners, they'd mock him behind his back - but apparently not in this case. The crew was clearly amazed by his talents and had come to respect him for saving their lives and limbs. Geeks are equal!

A good movie, nice views, good acting. A bit too slow, IMO, and not much of the opponent shown (I mean, you don't get familiarized withthe guys on the other ship). I'd prefer massive battles rather than one-on-one chase.

It's better to be a worldwide known drunkard than an anonymous alcoholic!

Of the three movies, no I don't think its the best. Yes it was a good movie, and yes it was lost between the two others. I really like the ending, I thought it was super and they definitley left room for some sequels. We'll see how they turn out...
