ApeXtreme

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

ApeXtreme

If you've been dying for some PC-to-TV, ass-to-couch gaming, there might be a solution for your problem

There is another Gaming Console coming out real soon (I know what you are thinking....oh no, not another one!!), but wait, this one is different. It's called the ApeXtreme (pronounced Apex Extreme), a PC-based console system based on the new VIA Glory Personal Gaming Console platform and using S3's DeltaChrome graphics chip. Slightly larger than the Xbox, the ApeXtreme will connect to your television and allow you to play PC games from the comfort of your living room. The system will support input from game pads or a keyboard and mouse.

The ApeXtreme treats your PC games just like a traditional console does (by using DISCover technology). While you'll still have to install the software (which will be automatically handled by the system), once it's installed, it runs just like any other console. DISCover technology lets you drop your PC game disc in the DVD drive and start playing right away, and embedded Windows XP means you won't have to wait for the system to boot up either, at least not any longer than any other console on the market.

The ApeXtreme will carry a VIA C3 1.4GHz processor, 300MHz S3 DeltaChrome graphics chip with 64MB RAM, DVD-ROM drive, component and composite TV connections, DVI connector, 256MB system RAM, 20GB hard drive, six USB 2.0 inputs (four in front, two in the rear), 6-channel surround sound and a modem port as well as a 10/100 Ethernet connector which will offer gamers the ability to play games online as well as download PC game patches!

In addition to being a gaming platform, the ApeXtreme will also offer a variety of other PC-like functions such as DVD, MP3 and Internet radio playback, although don't expect to do word processing or spreadsheet work on the ApeXtreme, as this is purely an entertainment system.

The relatively low PC specs might worry you a bit as new PC games are beginning to require around the same specs that the ApeXtreme provides , but the creators said that the system is optimized for gaming, so games should run a little better than on a similarly equipped PC. On another positive note, this is the first time in history that a console will launch with a library of thousands of games, so that means you'll have plenty to play when it's released.

The ApeXtreme will retail for around $399, with a slightly lower spec'ed model going for $299. The console should be available this spring at major retailers

Of course a nice looking picture of the ApeXtreme:

So, what's your opinion on this thing ?

Well, to tell you the truth, it is basically a PC. (even more so than xbox, with the Embedded Windows XP)
Though if that was out right now, it would have the fastest CPU clockspeed-wise of any console right now. The DeltaChrome is about a mid-tier graphics card. They went straight DirectX9 like ATI, so I'm guessing it will be similar to ATI moreso than Nvidia's current FX.

No matter how big a problem seems, there would always be hope, as long as someone keeps trying.

I can kinda understand its place in the market, and it sounds cool and all, but I have a friend who went one step further. He bought a high spec "cube" PC and has it sat next to his tv at home (which is in fact a 22" Flat Screen Monitor, mounted to look like a plasma screen)...looks a bit like a silver GameCube, but its a PC. It controls his stereo, tv, dvd player, dvd burner, surround sound system, cd-rw and all-around-the-house radio. He bought a special edition of WinXP which comes with a remote control so it looks like a normal entertainment system....and of course he can play games in the comfort of his armchair. Last time I saw him he was talking about upgrading the monitor to a projector for the full poncey cinema effect. This whole bundle, including speakers around the house came in at under £1500. Surely thats the way ahead??

I've been using my computer on my Big Screen TV for 5 years now. I don't need such things ...

Bah. You can hook your computer up to a TV and have better performance. I am pleased to anounce that my new computer's specs blow that thing away

However, i bet it's loads cheaper than a PC so for some it would be great.

Yeah, there are lots of people that already hooked their PC's to the TV and with better specs, but that's not the group they are targetting of course. There are lots of people who just don't have the cash to buy a new PC or just don't want to have one or maybe their parents don't want to spend loads of money on a new computer, just so you can play your games on it. For those people, this machine is a great solution. You can play PC games on the TV for a few hundred bucks, without having to buy a whole new PC which is much more expensive.

..unless you buy one off me in which case it isn't expensive..

my uncles got one of them absolutley tiny PCs, they do everything you need a PC for! He's got it set up as his server for his home network. High specs, and the fans are powerful, lol. You can stand behind them to keep cool lol.

Gee Eraser, you sound like a television commercial! Not that there's anything wrong with that... .

The only problem is that TVs have poorer visual quality that monitors, and thus the gaming experience would not be as good. This is due to the standard television having lower resolutions and refresh rates. This is of course, assuming that you do not have a $10,000 plasma or LCD television.

Here's a question; has anybody heard about the "Phantom" console? It is SO dodgy! HardOCP had a whole article on the guy behind it, and his office addresses were empty store fronts, and that sort of thing. He sounds trustworthy to me .
