Personaly, I don't like having money. If I have money in my account, I tend to spend it quickly. Not that I don't like saving, I put some money away every paycheck.

It's just that money is nothing, just bits of paper or metal. You gotta spend it to get something.

Seems that people should really give the guy a break then. Seeing as he seems to do more than most rich people to make a difference to society, then perhaps everyone should throw out their cliched meaningless moans about MS in general too. mainly as i have no problem with windows, it works, its constantly being updated to combat hackers and other stuff, and its bloody easy to use. So what is everyone *****in about?

he set up a charitble organisation to teach ppl how to use computer...computers that come with guess what operating system...windows.

Actually, Bill Gates gave away about 20 billion dollars to charity over the years, so yeah, we should really give Bill some slack! I don't see that many rich people hand out that kind of money to charity in the world you know...

Actually, I suppose its not how much you have that matters, its how you think of it. Are you so greedy that you want more and more, and die if someone steals $5? I'm sure mr Gates shows that he isn't as bad as Unca Scrooge in that he gives more than all of us here own in a year to charity.

Maybe he did donate money, but was it for publicity, or an increease in his public profile? Not that makes the donation any less generous, however his motives must be brought into question. I have noticed that whenever there is a rich public figure, they get criticised if they donate money, and criticised if they don't. I guess you just can't win.

get real. people like Gates could spend what we all earn put together in our lifetimes and not feel it. it's not even a matter of how you use it, because if you chuck enough wodge at something, you will eventually achieve a result. I think there's more value and honesty in a kid who gives up his pocket money for a good cause than the millions "donated" by the rich, and you can be sure they're getting the tax breaks off it.

Philanthropy is a different matter. although very much a dilettante's pursuit, it did have many positive consequences in older days, I'm thinking of Carnegie, the Levers, Cadbury Bros. etc, and they actually cared, got involved on a daily basis and used their wealth to benefit others because that was their guiding principle, not a whim or convenience. The difference. Port Sunlight, or photo-op.

I didn't realise he was a family man. By my reasoning he has done a great service to multiple generations by acumulating his fortune. That money can be used to facilitate thier happiness, see? You are right, money doesn't bring happiness. You use it to facilitate happimess.

I really don't care where his charity goes. It's making people somewhere happy and thus the money serves it's purpose. I must say, this thread has greatly improved my opinion of Mr. Gates.

who ever said that money DIRECTLY makes you happy. I dont think anyone did. I think everyone believes that money is just good for getting things. and those THINGS make you happy. Hell you might as well just say "money cant buy you happyness because hapyness isnt a tangible thing and money only buys tangible things (except ultima online characters)" lets not get silly now

actually money does make me happy but in an aesthetic sense. i like the designs of banknotes
