OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!!!!!!!
This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Well, technically, Linux isn't just plastered as 'Freeware', it's just open-source. That's what we have variants of it, like we see with RedHat (that has a pay version).

No matter how big a problem seems, there would always be hope, as long as someone keeps trying.

In order of classification :
Windows : Pros: Streamlined, Easy to use, Most software will run on it.
Cons: Mostly un-experienced people use it, so it's an easy target for hackers/viruses etc
Linux : Pros: Free, nice system. Hackers don't dare attack it because experienced programmers use it alot.
Cons: Hard to use, not many games/programs etc

Linux is great, however the lack of game support really annoys me. The only game that I know of that came out of the box with Linux support was UT2003. Yes you can use Wine but still, I intend to wait until games are being made for Linux before I make a permanent switch. For now, it's WinXP. By the way, why is it that I create a thread with the word "Linux" in the title, and everyone starts asking questions about Linux in a thread with a completely ambiguous title?

why on earth would you want to ruin a perfectly good operating system with games, for god's sake? leave Linux to the pro's. And as for viruses and hackers, i will repeat once again: properly configured and updated Firewalls and Anti-Virus programs and no Kazaa-ing.
in the commercial sphere esp for servers Microsoft is just one other player, not a particularly favourite one either; they have no special rights because they're big. They came to see us today because we're just about to choose another main system terminal app.. let's just say that they were never really in the frame and now are less so. If we blew Oracle out cos it was too slow then wtf do MS think theyre going to achieve? Still they took us out for a huge feed a snappin time, thx Bill!
it makes me larf when they go on about being the market leaders "no youre not" I usually point out. They even suggested getting rid of our Sun box, yeh right course we will, duh!
I've no problems with XP as a desktop o/s for home or as n/w clients, it's easy to use and stable enough plus there's RDP/RA support. But for core servers & terminal apps porting from other structures, forget it, its all emulated kak and you wouldn't want MS responsible for your absolutely critical apps, would you?

SpaceNut - Thanks for that. Very insightful .
Taw - Many people use MS for their critical apps! They use what they are comfortable with and for most people, that's MS. As for gaming, I think that games would run better under Linux. Besides, wouldn't it be preferable for the average user to play games on a platform such as Linux, rather than acquire a pirated copy of Windows?

yeh ah know they use what theyre comfortable with and believe me thats the reason we let them use XP Pro for clientside and Office 2K and all that stuff, but solely run yer business on MS? when its gotta handle data-aware controls and stuff? never. I built a new W2K server for work the other day, it's a dual Xeon jobbie, but it's only gonna be used for processing customer purchase details and compiling indices ready for download. The Sun box still does all the real work.
I couldn't and wouldn't trust MS for anything 100% critical.
