lol, typical

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

lol, typical

I was sorting out my network out last night, using Windows 2000 Pro as the OS instead of Windows 98SE cause I got bored of trying lol. I sorted out my new PC, all fine and dandy, works like a dream.

Then I shut it down, took it upstairs, plugged it in, and it works fine, still does. I then powered up my old PC, only to hear a spluttering sound. THen smoke billowed out the back of my PSU. I switched it off, but still it smoked! BLOODY HELL! My eight year old brother and my mate and I were all in the room when the smoke alarm went off. My mum rushed upstairs (shes a freak sometimes) holding a jug of water (whats that gonna do for an electrical fire?), and ushers us out of the room.

So anyway, I now have one cool running PC with FL, etc. on, and one PC with no PSU and ash all over the motherboard ! Fooking typical!

You didn't do something silly like change the voltage setting of the PSU did you?

Post Tue Jan 13, 2004 4:10 am

nope, just plugged it in, switched on, and poof!

You might have created a short when you moved it, the PSU would have definately been very close to it's deathbed either way. I remember when one of my PSU's went a few years ago and it sounded of this bizarre alarm after I had shut the pc down, like a firetruck. I would've laughed if I wasn't freaking out wondering what the hell was happening to my pc.

had a psu screw up on me the other week if thats all it is its a 5 min job to sort so be thankful
oh and get someone to set your mother straight about electrical fires before she fries herself

It has to do with the voltage. There was an inconsistency in the voltage (it wasn't 110 volts) and the computer didn't like it. So it fried itself. Happened to me twice, several parts will be ruined (including critical parts). I suggest replacing it with a better PC instead of repairing it. Buying a UPS will allow you to run the comp more safely.

PSUs have a limited lifespan. Maybe the fan couldn't cool it properly, perhaps the grills were blocked by dust, who knows? Maybe it just gave up. Sometimes PSUs will fall apart for no reason. Trust me, I have seen brand new PSUs in perfect shape who have fallen over two weeks later. They are rather temperamental unfortunately, which is why a good quality Zalman or SilenX is a good idea. They also have the benefit of keeping the voltage within very precise limits.

<yawn> storm in a teacup. wait till you electrocute yourself in a Tally printer or a Penril cupboard, that'll be the time to start screaming, a bit of smoke and a flash aint nothing to get worked up about. i'd have let your mum throw the water on then you could have passed the balme onto her, saying it was just a fuse otr the socket or something, women don't know the difference anyway, then you could have skanked a new pc. You gotta learn to turn these situations to your advantage. i convince my Mrs that loads of things are her fault and make her pay me back oh-hum I'm just a lot more skilled in the vicious art of one upmanship I suppose. Except where lobsters are concerned.

silly fellows I'm talking about the infamous Rubiks Cube lobster, or the storry-macho-cacco-pod-not-a-lobster (but looks exactly the same) as in the one the wifes still crowing victory over.
