Processor at 98 degrees centigrade, but no crash?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Processor at 98 degrees centigrade, but no crash?

I recently overclocked my CPU to 3.0 GHz using my tutorial , but the PC didn't like it, and it beeped at me whenever i switched it on. So I unplugged the PC Speaker off of my M/B and thought nothing else of it.

When my PC booted up a few days later it said

Check System Health ! VCore = 1.525

So I did, and looked at the PC Health Status thingy in me BIOS, and the Processor was running at 98 degrees centigrade! WTF? I'd been playing games and stuff for nearly a week, with no crashes!

It turned out I'd unplugged the CPU fan on my M/B by mistake !

Jesus I was lucky!

The problem is that when you run a CPU at higher speeds, it shortens the lifespan of the chip. This doesn't mean much, unless you plan to keep your computer for five years or so. Still, 55C is not that bad for an overclocked chip. When you start gettting up towards 70C, THEN I'll be surprised if your computer holds together!

@cardimine: How fast was your PC before you clocked it?

Or rather 'cooked' it!

how the hell did you manage to unplug the CPU fan by 'mistake'!

It was a 2.4 GHz, but overclocking up to 2.7 GHz would only have raised the temp by 10 degrees or so.

You crazy mofo, that's almost enough to boil water. My old comp (896 MHz) would lock up at about 50 degrees (the fans weren't installed properly, stupid computer store...)

Tell me about it! I once purchased a "new" CPU from a store, and later discovered that it was a display model! I realised this due to two main facts; 1) the fan wouldn't rotate at a high RPM, and 2) the heatsink was full of dust! Have to watch out for those dodgy little computer shops. Believe me, I know...

It's interesting that CPU cooling is a booming industry now. Back in the old days it was a bit of aluminium and a small fan. Now you have water cooling, compressor cooling, passive cooling, active cooling, and fans and heatsinks of every description. Well, at least you can't compain about a lack of choice!
