Mystery Park, Interlaken, Switzerland

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Mystery Park, Interlaken, Switzerland

I only just learned that:

1) Eric von Daniken is still alive; and,
2) He has created a tourist attraction in Interlaken, Switzerland, called Mystery Park.

It apparently opened this past summer and it is intended to highlight all the archaeological mysteries discovered on Earth that cannot be explained by human achievement because, as von Daniken always has said, our fur wearing forebears were just too stupid to do it alone without a kick start from off-planet.

And here I thought his school of "thinking" had finally lost some currency.

roflmao, he's a big ol' fraud and no mistake! He's even been proven to have made it all up and plagiarised whole pieces of fiction and passed them off as his "discoveries" yet there are squillions of fools who fall for this cr*p. In some ways i admire him for his gall and shrewdness.

problem is his populist claptrap obscures any serious investigation into the possibility of civilisations that may have existed in our pre-history*. Daniken's "work" has been poison in this respect. Oh yeh he made up the "von" too, he's no aristocrat, he's a pleb just like the rerst of us.

*more of this another day.

Arch, Eric "von" Daniken is an old fraud who wrote that Chariots of the Gods garbage, claiming aliens built the pyramids and all that rot.

@Taw
Yes but.... he's now considered to have created an attraction site that will draw more people than some actual archaeological sites that are within 50 kliks of Internlaken. Some La Tene culture sites, etc. He's expected to draw 300,000 visitors in 2003 and they project something like 500,000 annually.

My god when will his mind bending BS come to an end!

@Arcon
Too bad you don't know too much about this eejut. He would be a lot of flame fodder for you.

eh, it sounds like it would be fun. And why discount others theries when we have no proof to discount them with?

oooh thats so wrong RILMS! sorry but fair as you're being, there is in fact plenty of evidence to debunk Daniken. One of his central tenets is the supposed relationship between the ptyramids of Egypt and similar structures elsewhere in the world, notably Aztec Mexico and Inca Peru. Radio-carbon dating definitively sets all these structures thousands of years apart, some to well within recorded history. Which sort of blows his arguments apart from the start.

The man is a total fraud, his research is totally bogus, large chunks of his work are plagiarised from sources respectable and not-respectable, his theories plainly ludicrous, even very open-minded observers find them laughable and not backed up by the slightest concrete evidence. He makes Velikovsky look like Newton. yet he still makes oney despite the ridicule heaped upon him. He just manufactures pseudo-intellectual prolefeed for the gullible, and does it very effectively.

hell's teeth, the guy even fakes his own name so it looks more respectable and scientific. "von" Daniken indeed, 'cha!

Post Sun Jan 04, 2004 2:23 pm

Well, to be honest, I've never heard of the guy before.

If he does such a bad job of history, why does he still do it?

MacGuyver, you mean

Post Sun Jan 04, 2004 5:33 pm

What I don't get is that of all people, his Swiss neighbors agreed to let him build the f*&^)(* place at all. I mean, 300,000 visitors already in 2003?

Ok. It IS about money and this is how he sold the idea but I'd not thought that the Swiss like to be associated with crackpot swindles like this so publicly. I thought that's what those secret bank accounts were all about.

well he was a hotelier originally and this is probably just him reverting back to type. the place employs loads of local people and runs all year round, so i wouldn't think any local council is going to turn away revenue like that with those sorts of numbers.

(Note: in my experience the Swiss authorities will do anything if it gets them money. Their oft stated and much poised neutrality is a a convenience not a conviction)

hell, if I was nearby i'd be tempted to go myself just to see what its like. despite the subject matter it does actually look fairly professional from the website and kids would love it, I'm sure. My daughter sadly has fallen for this rot years ago despite my best efforts to induce scepticism and cynicism in her, oh well maybe she'll grow out of it.

oh yeh here's the promo pic..

quite what an upside down Smurf is doing there i don't know; that's an unexplained mystery in itself.

and why do i fancy the granma more than the mum? there's another mystery.
