Definitions of Spam/spoilers

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Definitions of Spam/spoilers

During my time on this site, I have seen many differences in opinions. But, in particular, I have seen a lot of disagreements on what is spam, what is a spoiler, what it flaming, and what isn't. Therefore, I propose this topic to arrive on a clear and concise definitions of these three terms. I will begin by proposing three definitions (that apply to this site) and anyone can add/subtract or criticise from there.

Spam: Replies with little or no relation to the topic that do not answer or propose any relevent questions or ones that present opinions that were not asked of or ones that point out small irrelevant flaws involving grammar or spelling

Spoiler: Information that alters how a person plays their game that is not directly hinted as would be in the thread by the topic name. A spoiler must 1) not be general information easily accesed on this site 2) Not be necessary information in reguards to the topic and 3) Be informations that causes a player to alter their gameplay to achieve an unseen goal

Flaming: Attacking another player's opiniuons or statements with the intent of discrediting/disheartening him WITHOUT the intent of correcting mis-information presented by the player in question

Do what you wish to them, I only wish to improve the lancers reactor comunity by clearing up this cloud of decit. --- VH16

You forgot one definition that drives me to drink on a regular basis.

FLOODING - posting a reply that is either a single word, many words not related at all to the SUBJECT of the thread but more of a response to another post, or it quite frankly looks like a chat session that would be better served in a hen house full of cackling chickens if you get the drift.

All of the above examples are a complete and utter waste of bandwidth and do in fact LEAD to flaming/spamming 100% of the time. Just look at the Arcon thread titled Arcon: Christmas Special for numerous examples.

One would think that this thread would be considered SPAM, and locked like "SPAM, a semantic definition"(or something like that) by esquilax.
Isn't SPAM also advertisement for business and/or websites that aren't related to the forums (in this forum's case, non-lancer stuff, unless you are in the OT... where SPAM is of a much more vague definition).

A lot of people tried, a lot of people failed. Only the mods hold the answer I'm afraid. Altough I don't agree all the time.
Anyway, I always fall back on my trusted opinion that these are mostly opinions.

and to reply to your statements:

A spoiler must 1) not be general information easily accesed on this site

So, every info easily accessed on this site is not a spoiler? Including the easily accessed spoilers in the spoilersection?

In my opinion a spoiler is giving away info that takes away the fun of figuring things out for your self. Such as telling where a gun is or telling what ever happens throughout the rest of the storyline.

No real opinios on the flaming and spamming parts.

Edit: Damn spelling.

Gee, thanks for that Marty. Just when I thought people had forgotten about all of my locked threads. Great.

Although I would be the first to propose a set semantic definition for spamming, etc, (actually I think I was ), I have since concluded that this will not be possible. This is due to the myriad definitions as well as the fact that some people enjoy posting spam. Therefore, I would propose that everyone should simply post on topic, and express an opinion . That way, posts would be relevant and will at least provide some insight into the issue in question.

Spoiler is the one that's a tough call some times, say when some newbie posts to ask about how to mount the guns he's tractored in without selling them and buying them back. Is it a spoiler to tell him to what to do, or should he be made to figure it out for himself? Telling him saves him a lot of money and changes the game by making he fly fewer missions. Or advice on how to beat Hovis in that #$&$@! race ... is giving advice a spoiler? If you want to be really strict, any help -- besides technical -- is a spoiler.

It shouldn't be a hard and fast rule, about spoilers. The Mods do a great job at being judicious about it. I took up a thread that Nickless joined me on for a while, trying to put together a prequel story. This necessitated dancing very close to the line about spoilers. But, in the OT at least, we were able to keep the thread alive without a *click*. I thought that this was a good example of using judgment on a case by case basis.
