They don't sell it outside of Aus do they?
I don't mind it in small doses, especially when I've got a craving for salt.

There is a little cheese shop near my apartment that caters to folks visiting from the UK and Ireland. Two things they carry are little jars of Marmite and Vegemite... I think they are made by the same company. I thought they were English but are they Australian instead?

They also have MacVities biscuits which I happen to like quite a bit, especially the HobNobs. The shop owner says that they are consumed as spreads or maybe a dip, he's not sure. He only stocks them because he gets so many requests for them.

They don't really appeal to me but.... when do you eat/use either of them? What do they taste like? Would they go on a HobNob

They do sell Vegemite in a few places here in the US. One of my favourite singers, an Aussie named Sherrie Austin, mentioned one day her favourite thing was Vegemite, but wasn't able to find it here. Afterwards, her fans kept bringing her cans/bottles (whatever it comes in) of the stuff.

Thats one thing i can say ive never heard of. But if its like Spam then i probably wouldnt mind it. Where can you find it in the US?

@Matt, try some exotic grocery store or a specialty one. You'd be surprised at the things you've never seen before or wouldn't have thought was edible. Things like cactus or jellied pigs feet. None of which, including Vegemite, have I ever had.

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 2:02 pm

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 6:49 pm

Vegimite and spam together???? iccch, they just wouldn't go well together, way too salty, and the flavor would end up as a soyvegtible-groundporkstuff mix, eww.

I thought Marmite, Vegamite, Spam etc was some sort of desperate measure taken to feed the Brits in WWII when the U-boats were cutting off food supplies. Sort of better that than nothing. I've tried them all, but wouldn't eat them by choice.

p.s. Spam is made from all the pieces of a pig that otherwise would go into dog food or a meat pie!

pah, you're too fussy mate!
I grew up in a household where you finished eating everything on the plate. The few times I have refused food would be instances like the last time my mum cooked some kidneys, you could smell the urine on them
