A new computer 4 me!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

@WLB

Yeah. I sort of guessed that this is what we were talking about. Stay strong, man!

I have seen and read about these but I have not used one. In your case, maybe something to consider? Don't know. Just a thought.

@Taw
Yeah. Gal. Thought that would shake you up.

@Archie
She was kinda cute, though. Wore tight jeans and stuff. She might be a little old for you. My guess is that she is 23, a couple of years out of college. Mind you, she had to be at least a little bit nice to look at or I would not have tolerated her condescending attitude.

get me a picture of this mythical "IT gal." Are you sure it wasn't just an effeminate man with long hair and you didn't have your specs on?

Post Tue Dec 30, 2003 3:44 pm

@Taw

Oh yeah. I'm really gonna be able to explain what I'm up to with her on that one aren't I? "Excuse me. May I take a picture of you with my digital camera so that I can post it up on the internet? " She already thinks I am a **** for being right about my HD giving up the ghost. She's really gonna like me after that!

What's so hard to believe? That its an IT gal or that she was cute?

if she's one of us, she won't mind; she'll think it's a laugh. If she isn't, then she won't, but then she shouldn't be doing this job if she's gonna be prissy. Is she hands on or won't she get stuck in? Can she run cables through ceiling voids and not mind getting covered in sh*t? if she rips her hand open opening up a case, does she go running for first aid, or does she make up a bandage with toilet paper, sellotape and methylated spirits?

@Taw

Part 1) Ah but you forget where I live and the rules of propriety now legally enforceable and backed-up by threat of civil liability and litigation. It is not as if I actually "know" this woman much less had a pleasant conversation with her. She would question my motives no matter what I said... as is expected by our rules ... and well ... hate to admit it but I'm too old and decrepid for her to be
even the eensiest bit curious.

Part 2) Uh. My employer is sufficiently large enough that they don't have IT do that kind of work. That stuff is contracted out. Our IT folks just play with the gear and snap the connectors together.... Well, OK, they also fiddle with the patch boards and stuff but I have never seen an IT person, regardless of gender
in any shape that would imply having forced to shimmy through crawl spaces, ceiling ducts, etc.

Part 3) I take it a verbal description will not convince you. I will check around to see if I can display ANY example of a female techie at least to dispel your notion that I speak in myths.

Post Tue Dec 30, 2003 5:48 pm

@Taw...

In my experience, when I've run across an IT person that just so happens to be female, they tend to be extremely proficient. Granted they are few and far between, but when you find one, chances are (again, in my experience) you can take their word as gospel.

Reason? They had to learn things by the book since so many tend to discount their knowledge by proxy. Many many hours of discussions have taken place over a few colds ones about this topic in particular.

Also as a side-bar, the ones I've had the pleasure of working with were hot as a firecracker.

There. You see? Nyaaa nyaa

Post Tue Dec 30, 2003 7:22 pm

'tis all lies and moonbeams!

seriously I've never met one. I once spoke to one but she turned out to be 17 and reading from a script for troubleshooting printers for home users, and was as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I was put through to another yonks ago but all she managed to say coherently was "memory management is a grey area" (unlike the inside of her head which was seriously lackin' in grey matter..)

u see, imho the ideal IT/PC technician is err male, just under 40, incredibly handsome and brilliant, lives in Stoke-on-Trent, watches animé and war films, shops at Morrisons; no idea who that could be!

This reminds me of an interview with a counter-terrorism operative: "Shoot the females (terrorists) first. They are twice as competent and twice more ruthless then their male counterparts"

does she make up a bandage with toilet paper, sellotape and methylated spirits?

ROTFL, I made the same bandage the other day, we call it the McGuyver bandage.

*sigh* The order is placed and later this month my little present ought to be arriving at my doorstep. Life is good

Now, I have a little bone to pick with Homeworld 2. I shall play you yet! Muwahahaha....

@WLB

Neato mosquito! What did you finally decide on?

Post Fri Jan 02, 2004 11:44 am

Pretty much the same thing mentioned before. HP zd7000, 17inch widescreen, 128mb nVidia gfx, 60gb 5400rpm HD, 1gig of RAM, 3.06GHZ Pentium 4, and a fancy docking station. *is happy*

Looked seriously at Eurocom (super high $) and Alienware (High $ and BAD service reputation. Customer service in Columbia or sumpn like that). Other manufacturers just didn't have as much bang for the buck (or bang period).

Columbia as in District of Columbia or Colombia the world's cocaine capital? Interesting because if the latter, it ties in with something I was just thinking of having a moan about.

plzd youre getting a docking station, makes a world of difference to a laptop that does. Well done that man!

Yes, unfortunately, it's the latter.
