Internet down - help?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Internet down - help?

Yes, It's me again, I'm now at home for the holidays and no longer have my broad band connection so haven't been around 24/7. This problem though is my sisters laptop. We have one phone line into which we have two modem lines - only one can be used at a time (don't start trying to persuade me to network them, that's my dad's decision and persuding him is FAR to much hassle!). When I had my comp. at home it worked fine. Now that I'm at Uni my sister plugs her laptop into the same line and it works. For about 3 mins. She then get's a message with the following:

"RPC [can't remember what it stands for; Remote Processer Connection or something? service terminated unexpectedly"
"NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM"
It then has a 1min countdown before rebooting the computer.

She has XP if that makes any difference but I can see no reason for the problem.

Any ideas out there?

Thx in advance.

Nick

that's the Blaster\Welchia worm, my friend, a particularly common virus. U need the security patch and the 2 fixes.

RPC stands for Remote Procedure Call, don't worry about that, it's just because of the virus u see that, get the fixes and patch and u shouldn't see that again.

U can get the sec. patch from MS and the fixes from Symantec, Mcafee and most other AV vendor websites, but if u get stuck I can put them on my ftp site for you.

How did I know it would be yourself to the rescue?

Thx for the help. Very rapid response - are you sure you do any work at all or just surf these forums?

I actually live in cyberspace, i am just a ghost, an anti-virus

actually it's Sunday and I'm avoiding the wife, and trying to configure some new 76gb SCSI drives in me server's RAID array at the same time.

Forgot it's sunday!

I will Kill my sister! She told me she'd done a scan, it had found the problem but needed downloads of the internet and of course she couldn't. This was some time ago so of course I dispaired that she didn't use the other computer to download it!

After 30 mins pissing about I find out she HAD done that, fixed it and caught it again but didn't think to do another scan! I am AMAZED. Not at bizarre as some of your helpdesk horrors but enough to annoy me

Cheers

poor Zone. once again my observation that women are the bane of computers is borne out, with apologies in advance to any women who may be reading this!

@ zone the blaster worm particularly targets computers that have successfully been infected before so make sure you have the patches from m$ or you will never get any peace
the gf had it on her pc and swore she didnt till i showed her the wee bu**er in her task manager
