A few questions ... help would be much appreciated.
I was reading up on Windows XP Pro, it is apparently built from the model of Windows NT. I used to have NT and it sucked for getting games to play. Is it easier to play games off the Pro or will I have to look forward to a lot of configuration nightmares? How is it in comparison to XP Home?
Second also easy:
I will be buying a custom configured computer as I don't have time or patience to do it myself. The heat sink is a contention for me. Theirs is not powerful enough according to some here in these forums, they do not have better ones. If they have used the paste to connect it onto the CPU is it possible to change it or does that preclude any other options?
Third, a bit harder:
What do I have to know about how Firewalls work (I've never had one before)? And what is a good one?
Fourth and hardest question:
How do I get an XP Home Wi-Fi system (from my work laptop) to NOT reselect my Access points?
I have a Linksys WAP and a Linksys Wireless Router, I can only connect through to the internet with the WAP, but the WAP is connected to the router, so when XP Home automatically keeps checking the available networks and picks the router while I'm online, it drops my connection.
Regarding the router, I have never been able to figure out how to route wirelessly, but it still routes with wires. When the comp detects the router it just assumes I should be using that and switches to it. I'll be fine one moment, then the next second all download activity has stopped. I need the router to keep 3 computers connected, but I'm not entirely certain I'm using it right as they all seem to connect properly through the one WAP.
So I want to know how to prevent the Wi-Fi from picking up the router or to keep it from logging off the WAP automatically.
I have 128 bit encryption and a name for the network, but (and this may be where the problem lies) the wireless router requires its own network name separate of the WAP. When I set it up the first time, I was confused to whether it had to be the same name or a different one. So I did the same. This time, I think it is showing up as "default", while the other has the name I gave it ... I'm so confused.
Worst yet, I've spent a lot of money on this network and I'm frustrated beyond all measure. It took me a month just to get two computers working on it without difficulty. Then my coworker had a freeze-up and stupidly pulled out the PCMCIA linksys wireless card and now it doesn't pick up anything but the router. AHHHH!
BTW, I did ask this in the LAN thread, but as it isn't specifically a LAN problem no one answered me to my satisfaction. Any help would be most appreciated.
