How do you classify a n00b ?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

All I hope about N00bs or Newbies is that in the beginning they read 10 posts for every one they make. I did that and no one ever called me a n00b or newbie.

B, C, E and G

But I'd like to point something out. The feared n00b, I define as B C E and G. But the Newbie, however, I believe is a completely different thing. As the Newbie evolved into the N00b, the Newbie was nothing. Then the vets started to start games over and were at low levels, hence the Newbie. So the Newbie, would be A. I'm not saying that a N00b is not a Newbie, but a Newbie is not generally a n00b.

A) Rank (Recruit, 2nd lieutenant, etc...)
Not at all. Rank only tells someone what their posting rate is (Long veteran w/ few posts or newcomer with many posts)

B ) Questions ("Can you tell me where the Hispania is ?" etc)
Somewhat. Questions are good, they're what made them come here in the first place. It's just when they're being... er... (what's a non-derogative term for stupid?) ______ then the question identifies them as a n00b. (Such as already answered questions.)

C ) Topics Posted ( "What is the Best Ship ?", "What is the Hispania" etc)
Same as B. Somewhat. (If it repeats a previous topic, then n00bishness is inversely proportional to the time of the last topic it repeats, increased the more of said topic is repeaded). Or sometimes there's, well... _______ threads too. (I can't think of an example, but one you'd normally equate with being silly when they aren't.)

D ) Manner ( Posts with no paragraphing, capital letters etc)
Almost definitely. Depends on the person's age/native language. If the person is a native english speaker (or native speaker on the board's default language) with more than eight to ten years of schooling behind them, then definitely. (With exceptions of people with disabilities)

E ) Attitude ( "I'm just posting this to raise my rank" etc)
Definitely
(Oh, add the superior attitude "I art holier than thou" to that, too.)

F ) Posting frequency (1-2 posts/day= N00b, 3-4 posts/day= Regular ,etc)
Not at all. I post (on average) much less than once per day. Some n00bs do the opposite.

G ) Posting Area (Asking for spoilers in the discussion forum)
Definitely, with the exception of learning disabled.

Basically, a newbie is any newcomer. Good or bad.

n00b is a subset of newbie. A n00b is one who is new, but unwilling to learn or be considerate of other forumgoers, or to do things like ignore stickied threads, being unwilling to read around first for information (instead of being lazy and asking straight off.)

Actually, n00bishness is all attitude. They're just newbies with attitude.

(Hey! That last line would work in a post all by itself. Yay! More than semi-cohesiveness with a conclusion that isn't half as long as the post!)
--------------------------------------------------
Edit: Hey! Who can figure out a formula for n00bishness?
n = n00bishness (lowercass on purpose)
T = days/months/years spent on forums out of total 'age' of forums.
f = time forums have been active
s = time spent on forums
A = attitude
l = lazy (also lowercase on purpose )
c = coherentness. Whether they are clear or not (Includes language mechanics and manner)
L = amount of lurking done
R = repeated threads
r = repeated threads made by said newbie
m = good use of language (makes sense)
M = mechanics (spelling/grammer)
t = number of repeated topics already existing
[code
n = NAc+l+R - L
<pre><font size=1 face=Courier>
Which can expand to
[code
n = (f-s)A(m+M)+l+(t^2)/(t-r) - L
</font></pre>

Nickless said,

And yet again, it all comes down to opinion (and I'm right j/k)

You are probaly right accually. Everything comes down to an oppninon, and opnions mean squat to everyone else but you.

A ) Rank ( Recruit , 2nd lieutenant etc)
A little bit, on second thought no. The rank doesn't mean much to me.

B ) Questions ("Can you tell me where the Hispania is ?" etc)
A little bit. I don't mind answering these questions though.

C ) Topics Posted ( "What is the Best Ship ?", "What is the Hispania" etc)
I dont like these "What is the best..." threads. On the forums their is a sticky'ed post saying no more of them.

D ) Manner ( Posts with no paragraphing, capital letters etc)
I hate these when used incorrectly.

E ) Attitude ( "I'm just posting this to raise my rank","I art holier than thou" etc)
I hate spam. I really really hate spam.

F ) Posting frequency (1-2 posts/day= N00b, 3-4 posts/day= Regular ,etc)
I post 6+ a day. It doesn't matter how much you post as long as you don't insalt people by not checking your questions.

G ) Posting Area (Asking for spoilers in the discussion forum)
That is n00bish.

H ) Other ( Please state)
I think youve covered it all.

Well, I dont like classifying people as n00bs either. I mean we were all newbies at some point, but I refer to a newbie as someone with no clue, someone basically just starting out, I call arrogant bastards l33ters...... Its probably wrong but i dont care. What I do know is that N00b is only a temporary status until they become more experienced. Its like when shaping yourself, you got a shapeless, inexperienced, dumb blob of a person who over time becomes a valiant and powerful lancer. Besides that, I dont really think the word n00b is too harsh either, I like saying it, it sounds a little like boob so its cool

3/4 posts a day is normal?
id say 4/8
12/20: super spammer

Muwahahahaha!!!
I lost it!!!.....or better yet; did I ever have it?

Post Thu Dec 18, 2003 2:15 am

here is how to classify a n00b: you say to them: N000b !!!!111

Post Thu Dec 18, 2003 10:39 am

I don't agree with Wolfy on the 12/20 posts a day=super spammer statement. I post everyday between 12 and 20 posts, but I don't consider myself a spammer. Spam is about the content of each post, not about the number of posts you have/make per day. that's a big difference.

A lot of people reply to every post on these forums but nobody calls them a spammer, simply because they don't post spam.

uhm... dunno, some newbys r just annoying and can be classified as n00bs...

i would say this 1 time, how to get rid off a n00b
just the same i did with Killzone;
- he annoyed me to much
- kill him almost every time he get's to close to u

and a n00b always stay a n00b (how many posts he wrote, it stay a n00b)
a newby will become better and will also blast n00bs l8r

@DB, Killzone? I had nothing but high regards for him. He even made it into my play The Taming of the Psycho as a lead character.
