hence why Bognor Regis has it's name, Bognor "of the King"

anyway. ff, all this unfair imho. I was ALWAYS on the coyote's side, 'kin hatedthe roadrunner, flash git with his beak and all. why does the ledge he's standing on fall, and the mountain the coyotes on collapse? it's just not right!

Sorry, I can't resist... Whenever someone mentions latin, I think of the scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian where the Centurion is correcting Brian's latin.

Centurion: What's this then? Romanes eunt domus? People call around marnays they go the house?

Brian: It...it says: "Romans go home."

Centurion: No, it doesn't.

Brian: Aih.

Centurion: What's Latin for Romans? Come on!

Brian: Aih! Aah! Romanus!

Centurion: Goes like...?

Brian: Anis?

Centurion: Vocative plural of anis is...?

Brian: Ani?

Centurion: Romani...Eunt? What is eunt?

Brian: "Go"! De...

Centurion: Conjugate the verb "go"!

Brian: Aah...ere, eo, is, it, imus, itis, eunt.

Centurion: So eunt is...?

Brian: Aah, ehm...third person plural present indicative. Ehm..."they go".

Centurion: But "Romans go home" is an order, so you must use the...?

Brian: Aih! Imperative!

Centurion: Which is...?

Brian: Ehm, oh...oh, ehm...i, i!

Centurion: How many Romans?

Brian: Aah! it's...plural, plural! Ite! Ite!

Centurion: Ite.

Brian: Aah, ah.

Centurion: Domus? Nominative?

Brian: Ah, ah?

Centurion: "Go home", this is motion towards, isn't it, boy?

Brian: Ehm...ehm...dative sir?

Sword: [Slinskt

Brian: Aih! Ooh! Not dative, not the dative, sir! Nah, aah! Ooh! The...accusative! Accusative! Aah! Domum, sir! Ad domum!

Aah, ooh!

Centurion: Except that domus takes the...?

Brian: Aah! The locative, sir! Aah!

Centurion: Which is...?

Brian: Domum! Aah, ah, aah...

Centurion: Domum...um. Understand?

Brian: Yes, sir!

Centurion: Now, write that a hundred times!

Brian: Yes, sir! Thank you, sir! Hail Caesar, sir!

Centurion: Hail Caesar! And if it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.

Brian: Oh, thank you, sir! Thank you, sir! Hail Caesar and everything, sir! Aah. Mmh! Aah... Finished! Aah.

Roman Soldier: Right. Now, don't do it again!

I refuse to participate. I'm a Celt. GO IRISH/SCOTTISH/BRETONS/Others! SACK THOSE LATIN FARTS!

Wow, I understood absolutely everything in that.

@Indy, actually, neither offends me, but I do find the Warner Bros. Latinization more amusing.

wolf, do you know latin? if not shut up

I must agree with that however. People who do not know Latin cannot truly do latinization of English.

All that to say, I'm being extremely picky.

lol, and they say english is hard to learn...

Post Sun Nov 30, 2003 1:59 pm

I always thought Latin was a lot easier to learn than English because it's a highly structured language lacking the ambiguities and nuances of English. its a language of clear expression, hence why it was the language of administration and law long after it ceased to be a spoken language. btw most Romans who wanted to be seen as men of letters wrote in Greek which was far more subtle & expressive. One major difference between English and Latin is that English has lost most of it's inflections and case order is a lot looser, plus we use a lot more pronouns (which u have to if u give up inflections)

Spanish is like that too. Makes it a b*tch to learn, because there are little phrases that make NO sense what so ever but mean somthing special you have to memorize. Argh! I suspect the evolution of all the romance languages has rendered them as such.
