Need Help

Ok, I tried asking for help on these forums before (and wasnt really helped......) so i was kind of skeptical about posting this, but ok, I thought i would give it a shot anyway. Ok, I recently visited a site, and to my regret, it reset my homepage, now..... this isnt THAT catastrofic, but heres the big deal, even after i set my homepage back, whenever i shut down my computer and turn it on again the website is back. Its some kinda of stupid search engine, and not matter how many times i change the home website, whenever i restart it resets it. Can you guys help me?

Ah yes very common.........get adaware ....

Yeah, I just downloaded it and did the check, found 33 items i supposedly deleted. Ok, so i was happy, then i got the latest update on references or something (I hit the ADwatch button and got the latest references) then ran it again, it found 10 new ones, again, it sounded like it was finding and deleting them so i was happy. Then, I ran it AGAIN and it found 4 the previous search didnt find. So im kinda skeptical its doing anything, im gonna try restarting, ill edit with how it went.OK, that didnt go as well as i had hoped, no, it didnt help the problem, and now, every time i turn on internet explorers it sends me an add for some stupid search bar, and whenever i restart it also adds 3 other search engines to my favorites.

check in run>msconfig>startup for anything obviously linking to u websites etc. that doesn't look kosher, anything that looks ad-like, also go to programs>startup and see if there's anything there. Unf. that's just the start, there are lots of places this stuff lurks around in ur 'puter, but the above will give u a good start on killing it.

@Com.

Very dumb question about your problem. Might there be one of those annoying
executables that get loaded into your PC when you visit a site? A watchamacallit, derivation of those spybots. I remember having a problem like that and it was due to one of those little spy things. It reset my home page so that I would keep adding to the hit count of that website. I forget the name of it now.

that's exactly what they are, Indy, but u can kill most of them thru msconfig>startup, although meself i'd check in services too & clear out me IE6 cookies cache as well. course as i don't use IE6 (because its fonkenhausen) its not a problem i get as Opera 7.21 gives me far more control over that sort of crud.

@Taw, that's a nifty little config utility. But unfortunately for me there are a lot of lines I don't recognize for things. I am not experiencing the same problems as Comont, but if I were, I'm not sure I would recognize it from the things I want to keep.

Im using Windows ME (yeah it sucks) I tried disabling it in MSConfig and im gonna restart, edit with details and the screenshot. Nevermind, I fooled about in MSCONFIG and managed to disable that Iexplore.exe error i always get, and it stopped the ads from running (Thanks taw, I hadnt realized how MSCONFIG was useful and i used it a million times before to make better system preformance)

i'd junk that entire o/s, it's total rubbish; the worst o/s MS ever brought out. 98se is better than that POS. if its an upgrade u should at least be able to unistall Me and go back to 98!

Yep, it is ****, but I had it preinstalled with my computer, so im in a world of **** when it comes to upgrading/uninstalling/installing OS's. But im getting a new computer very soon, so i dont really care how screwed up this one is.

@Taw, the only ones I don't know if I need or not, are as follows:

misiTRAY ........ c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\misiTRAY.exe
RFX_auto_upgrade ........ <blank>
loadQM ....... loadqm.exe
SchedulingAgent ........... mstask.exe

And I have 2 of these:
LoadPowerProfile ........... Rundll32.exe powerprof.dll.LoadCurrentPowerScheme

The others I think I know what they do.
