@Chetnik

Consumer Questions:

Say Santa Claus tells you that you one free Christmas present wish usable at any time within the next 24 months with which you may get yourself the best PC dream machine that can be had.

a. When (month/year) would you make the wish?
b. Would it be 64bit?
c. Would it be made to order for you from a local shop you know or from one of the big custom houses like Voodoo? Or would you make it yourself?

I won't ask what you would put into the dream machine in specifics but from what you see available off the shelf today, what would you put into it as a benchmark against that future dream machine?

Oooh, that's a tough one... I never really thought about 'money is no object' situation. It didn't seem right, but I'll answer anyway.
First off, 24 months is a very long period in IT industry, especially nowadays. (I'm into computers since I was 7, which means 11 years of expirience, and trust me, IT's going exponential. Very.)
I'll tell you what I'd get now, because I can't accurately predict what's gonna be available to me in 2 years time, otherwise, I'd wait, since I already have a pretty capable comp.
<cut to the chase>
a: Already answered -- the time is now.
b: Yes, but not for the sake of 64bit, I'd take Athlon64 server version, because it has 384kB L1 cache, and a model with 512kB is to appear in 3 months time... That's why it's so damn fast.
c: I'd have the parts delivered straight from the factory, and I'd put it all together myself. That's how I handled all my comps till now, and I intend to keep it that way...
I could go on and compile a list of components I'd like to own right about now, but I choose not to, because it induces wishful thinking, and I don't like how it can take over me. (I kinda make myself learn all the details that are available, and then spend hours thinking how great it would be/perform...)

dont forget the arctic silver (and for gods sake DONT use the epoxy )its worth a few degrees on the cpu
and the extra fans as a hot comp. is not a good idea and gives reduced performance
