Sorry to detract from your snow talk, but this is a question for you Ukers. Is the early morning TV talk show "The Big Breakfast" still on in the UK, or has it been cancelled by now?

I was in England in '94 and because of jet lag, I was actually up in the mornings there and caught the show. I absolutely loved it, it was so funny! But I heard a rumour recently that it had been cancelled.

unfortunately not. hmmm 1994, I believe that I'd be right in saying that the presenters were Chris Evans (ginger with glasses) and Gabi Roslin (blonde with nice legs ). The big breakfast was a very popular programme, that sank in popularity after Chris Evans left the show in about 95/96. They finally found a presenter with enough charisma to fill Evans' shoes in about 97 - Johnny Vaughn. He was the only perminent member of the show through to about 2001 when the show was cancelled. Vaughn left the show to advance his career due to his enormous popularity at the time, but it soon became apparent that his style and inventiveness was the only thing keeping the show together, so when he left, so did the audience. Channel 4 tried changing the format of the show entirely trying to cover up the fact that it really was Vaughn's show. They tried quite a few new presenters out, changed the set, added a studio audience, took the audience away, and eventually gave up after six months and cancelled the show completely. Its a real shame because the show was just superb and had become an institution....they simply didn't have the talent any more to replace the presenter that had influenced the format for years. RIP Big Breakfast.

They've replaced it with a show called R:I:S:E nowadays, which tries to fill the gap but just isn't as successful.

That's too bad. I really liked that show. I think you're right about the presenters, I remember the glasses. I thought it was funny how they interviewed celebrities in bed. And their silly name for their contest "Housey, Housey" to win one half of a duplex! That was hilarious!

@ff, I do use feet and inches, as indeed I did in the post. I am however, mindful of the fact that we are one of the few countries that do. Therefore, I included a conversion to millimetres for our fellow Europeans.

@lv a metric foot is exactly 30cm...its widely used in industries were you don't need to be accurate about what you are buying - for example, textiles. I think the idea was to try and get people who use "old money" to come into the metric way of thinking. Bizarre isn't it

@ff I do live and work in kent. I live in Canterbury (south kent) and work in Chatham (north kent) and it is 48.6 miles from door to door...ok so I exaggerated 1.4 miles but who's countin'..!...So I clock almost 100 miles a day which is not particularly healthy for my car, or me for that matter. I know it must sound odd to you as you know kent, and you know how quick it takes to get from ashford to chatham, but its just because the county has 1/4 the amount of traffic on the motorways in comparison to every other county in england.

Ah, ok, so I work in an industry where we count the millimetres, still think its strange that I’ve not come across the unit before.

Learn something every day though.

grom m8 what road(s) r us using to get from Canterbury to Chatham as i used to clock it as about 30 using the A2 (old kent rd ) which is a straight line, even using the M2 it's not that much farther. We lived in Littlebourne next to Howletts so I'd nip through Bekesbourne, onto the A2 and straight up the M2 junction. 48 miles seems a lot to me for that journey. Sure ur not clocking it in kms?

@taw no its definitely miles, canterbury to chatham would be about 30m on the M2, but I live in chartham downs which is 5 miles to canterbury...and as I avoid the city centre in the morning, to get to the a2 I go via chartham hatch which is another 4 or 5 miles on top...and then at the other end I work closer to rochester so its quicker for me to stay on the m2 til junc. 1 and double back 5 or 6 miles than go through chatham centre....these cuts save me at least half an hour...and when I'm still doing it 50 minutes, I'm sure you can understand why I'd want to do that.

There ya go, now you all know where I am in the mornings if ya want to sniper me hmmm...now all ya need is my car reg and colour and I'll be dodging pot shots every morning. lol.

@lv I only found out a couple of weeks ago too, when my missus insisted I pay for some new curtains (!), its one of those useless "dad facts" that you know will come up in a game of trivial pursuit one day
