Help me! Networking problem...

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Help me! Networking problem...

I finally got myself a router to network together my two computers I have at home. One runs WinXP SP1 and the other older one runs Win98SE.

I have two computers hooked up to my LinkSys BEFSR41 router and both computers have the workgroup name MSHOME and both computers have some form of IPX protocol installed. But the problem is that I cannot see both computers on the network. On this computer (WinXP SP1), I have access to the other computer's (Win98SE) shared folder but I cannot access my WinXP's shared folder from my Win98 machine because it cannot see it on the network. What's wrong?

I would like to play LAN games as well but of course, because of this, I can only host the game on my Win98 machine, which is too slow. If this worked correctly, I can host the game on my WinXP machine.

Everything else works correctly. I can use my cable broadband on both computers.

Also, since im a newbie at this networking stuff, Im not sure what type of information you guys need to help me out so plz just ask.

So what you're saying is that you can see both computers, but you can't access the XP box's shared folders? Have you checked your permissions, to make sure everyone is set to have access.

I refer you to my own post about this very subject with the same router and o/s from a couple of months ago. Xeno posted a very comprehensive reply which fixed my problem, which was that I could either see the network or the internet but not both until Xeno showed me how to do it. Honestly it takes only a couple of minutes tops (but I aint got the time to type out the answer as I'm off out in about 5)

Is your HDD on the comp with WinXP FAT32 or NTFS? If it's NTFS, you're basically screwed... (FAT32 can't access NTFS, but NTFS can access FAT32)
Also, try enabling NetBios over IPX/SPX.

Careful what you wish... You might just get it.
