I prefer Norton myself.

I'm gonna say go with McAfee. I don't know how well it performs...but so far Norton has contributed to some serious computer woes for me (at least, Norton is going to be attributed with those woes because we ruled out viruses and such). I have heard reports that Norton can and does rewrite certain files, thus rendering them corrupt. I'm not sure of the validity of these claims, but seeing as how it happened to me once (certain dll's were corrupted), I wouldn't dismiss them.

EDIT--that being said, I think I still like Norton...it's just that I've never tried McAfee, but I've heard better things about it.

Currently I have McAfee 7.0, but I think it is corrupting my Sidewinder GameVoice.


Btw If I have a Firewall router, do I need a software firewall?

You don't really need a firewall with a router because of the hardware firewall it has, but if you wanna host games you will need to have it open, so that means you'll probably want a software firewall.

I've been running some form of Nortons since '98 and I can honestly say it's always been a pleasure to use. The interface is simple and quick and it's pretty rare for me to get bugged by it. The latest version of Internet Security can be annoying when you first get it, as it wants your approval for every program that tries to access the internet. After you have it running for a week or so though it's no trouble at all.

Neither. Go with ZoneAlarm. Its proven to stop attacks and stuff better than the others.

I use norton antivirus and zone alarm, Although PC-Cillin is a goon antivirus too.

btw, I think Norton and McAffe make viruses to stay in business.

If you end up going with the router option, microsofts site has the udp ports that will need to be opened. i would also steer clear of using a software firewall in conjunction with the router. 99% of the time the router firewall will be strong enough.

also. i use a siemens speedstream 2614, and would recommend it to anyone. 4 port 10/100 with printer, serial, and wan ports. very cool. easily setup high speed or dialup internet sharing. around 70$ these days.

I suppose it is a firewall as well?
