Matrial Arts

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

hey...I played Budokan long time ago. Can that be counted as well?

I didn't Silat is famous over there (whereever you live Wizard..)

There many2 known type of silat, the top one around at the moment is Silat Gayung (two step martial art)

and for you weapon freaks out there, try a Keris. It is a short range assault dagger used in Silat.

Oh, this thread is about Martial Arts. I saw the topic and I was curious what matrial arts meant. I figured there were three choices, 1 when it said matrial it meant matronly or matriarch so this thread would be about people's grandmas, 2 when it said matrial it meant marital so the thread would be about marriage or relationships or sex, 3 the most likely choice was martial arts and I was right. I don't do any martial arts, but I like to watch them on TV.

Let's get those missiles ready to destroy the universe!!

Truthfully, most of us Martial Artist get there training and techniques from two places. 1 Most of ou training comes from the MS instructor of your particular forms, and 2 from the TV. Now im not going to make my self out to be a master but, Ive ony taken Tae kwon do for 9mos. got to Blue belt and gave the instructors assitant a run for his money. Most of the stuff I know is from the TV. So when someone says they have never had any training, you know better.

Dragons are the most legendary creatures of all. They are Gracful, yet Powerful. Elegant, yet Brutal. You may have even been best of friends, but you did not disrespect him.

I wanna learn broadsword fencing. YES: Knights could wield such swords with ease. And it's classier than bujutsu or Chinese fencing. Class is everything in fighting.

Post Wed Jul 30, 2003 10:00 pm

you better build up some muscles if you want to learn how to fight with a broadsword. those things weigh a bit (some 30 kilo's)

Post Wed Jul 30, 2003 10:16 pm

Judo for 7 years and stil going.

@At locotus, a broad sword doesnt way 30k, a claymore, a broad sword no more then 2lbs (bit more then 1kilo). It has no need for really heavy weight as it was used to trust trough the enemey not to slash him for wich more weight and lengt is required.

if we're talking class the sorry but I have to say a Katana Blade has more style than a broadsword of Rapier, but nothing compares to a Naginata. No melee weapon has more class! But combine a Katana or Butterfly knives with some nice Win Chung and I have a sneaky feeling that a Knight of the realm would get the beating of his life

i do Tae Kwon Do

Post Thu Jul 31, 2003 3:45 pm

I have two things to say.

1) Kung Pow Enter the Fist is the greatest martial arts movie.

2) Have you ever seen the first Indiana Jones? If so then I ask you to please recall the part where the master swordsman leaps in front of Indi and starts trying to scare him off with fancy swordplay. Indi's reaction: to stand there for a second or two... then pulls his gun out and shoots the guy.

PS, Both my families are in Tae Kwon Do so #1 is a joke (But still, good to carry a gun in Texas)

hehe, Martial arts cant beat some one fireing a gun at you from 10 meters

Post Thu Jul 31, 2003 7:54 pm

@ artic

then you should try zen.

and ehh... then I would say you have never seen a broadsword

what you state, a claymore, is a sword no more then 1m/3' 4" long. A broadsword
is about 1.9m/6' 4" long. the broadsword has the look of a crucifix held up-side-down, a claymore goes more for the look of a sabre (without the curved blade)
the claymore is without the most doubt scottish in origin. used in battles to strike quickly but moderately hard. if you can lift a broadsword, when letting it down, you could slash a person/metal pipe in half.

Broad Sword with Double Ring Guard
During the 16th century the Knightly sword underwent many changes, particularly in the area of the hilt. ........ Since many of the swords were carried when full armour was not worn, hand protection was important. ....... This is a highly effective sword with all necessary length and power, but without a great increase in weight. Made in India by Windlass Steelcrafts. Scabbard included.

Overall-46 inches * Blade-36 inches long, 1 inches wide * Wt.-3 lbs. 6 oz.

.

46inch is 1.16m and NOT 1.9m wich is more that is more then the length of an medieval men. (1.6m)

I'm sure you can crush a skull and helmet whit it, that is what the thing was made for. But since most commeners didnt wear full mettal plating you could just slash at neck hight or if the run straight at you just hold it up and spike them on it. And if the sword is in balance you dont need to be particulary strong for it, just a good stamina to keep it in the air whit one hand. And if seem a dozen of old swords as the city im from (deventer, the netherlands) has its bit of medieval history so I can tell you that when you are wearing a 5kg mailan cap and helmet and leather armor you dont want a sword that is to heavy or extreemly long.

I've taken a few forms of Tae Kwon Do, and most recently, Budokai. I've been self-training, planning to go back to it soon... very soon. The highest belt I attained, was Red... just below black, in that case. The class sorta fell apart... it was me and 2-3 other guys, and I lost interest... alas.

TV is NOT a good martial arts instructor... it may teach you to look cool doing a jumping spinning outside cresent kick, but try and use that in a fight and see what happens. 99% of the time, it will get you owned. Nor will TV teach you the detailed body mechanics to actually generate POWER w/ a technique. Note, no degree of martial arts training will make you a good fighter... not necessarily. Giving the masters assistant a workout is good, but keep in mind that FIGHTING makes one a good fighter... not sparring. I've come across a number of black belt "masters" who aren't worth beans. Not that I'm hot spit... I'm just saying, there are two types of martial artists... those who like the "art", and those who like the "martial". Don't get too cocky... there's no substitute for REAL experience, and all masters are NOT created equal. If you're giving the masters assistant a run for his money at blue belt, you might consider finding a new master. I may not be a master myself, but I've had enough experience to spot a false master when I see one... I had to check out four different schools before I found one that was worth it... I have a lot of free uniforms. It amazes me... what passes for a "master" sometimes. One school I looked at... the black belts couldn't even throw a solid snap kick! Bah!

Note, if you practice martial arts consistently for a few years, you'll surely be in shape. If you practice firing a gun consistently for a few years, you'll still be a lard-arse. Martial arts, while not all that valuable on the modern battlefield, can be extreamly valuable to anyone not in a life/death situation on a daily basis. I love guns, but martial arts is generally more valuable... it teaches you respect, keeps you fit, and trains you to AVOID incidents that would require someone drawing a gun, thus lowering your chances of going to prison over some stupid bar fight.
