What in the hell are Emus?

OHHHHHHHH!!! Those things that allow you to play old console games on your computer!!!!! OHHHHHHH!!!!!! You might have to get a mod's opinion on this. I don't know the legal mumbo-jumbo.

I'm not familiar with the legalities behind emulators. Roms would still be considered warez, I think. Technically Emulators can be legal, IE if you own the game. For example I had a game for my SNES that I wanted to play on my PC, so I got the ROM for it. (Sucks without a gamepad) I'm fairly certain it's legal in that case.

Downloading roms you dont have is illegal. Roms sites in general seem to get shut down all the time tho i think this is due to the availability of more recent games, such as N64 games etc, rather than spectrum or amstrad pulling out the lawyers Amiga emulators are easy to get hold of but the 'Kickstart' OS ROM is illegal to have unless you already own it and amiga have actively stopped people from making it available. As long as you own the game tho it is legal i think it is a similar situation to that guy that broke the DVD encrytion - his argument was he wanted to play it on his mac (or something) so was forced to do break the encryption to do it. He got off 'cause it was ruled that once you have bought something you should be able to use it on any piece of hardware you want.

Tho in the end, for old games, it comes down to the 'abandonware' pandoras box of legality which is another thing entirely

Well, sorry for opening a small can of worms here... Talking about EMU's and ROMS isn't illegal, but some forums don't let you. hey oh, doesn't matter anyhow, I found a good site (www.mame.de) with the stuff I needed.
I don't think the really old stuff is illegal anymore, although when you start the download it asks if you own the ROM, which I don't but the games are form 1986, so I doubt anyone is that bothered.

Seriously, the o-ar following Elite was amazing childish.
Wouldn't surprise me if Braben did stop people from playing nicely. They're meant to be working on Elite 4, but no major details have been released yet. Hope it's not as bug ridden as Frontier was. There home site is here. Not much there though.

@Top Gun, Yeah! I found a Spectrum one once! Most of them didn'y work out too good though.
Found what I was looking for over on a Danish website though.
