seeking an alternate disk defrager real badly..

Ok I really noticed my Freelancer installation with the "Initialiazing Setup eninge" takes for AGES to load.. so I kinda decided to go and defrag my hard drive. Wrong, I get this "out of memory please close all programs and try again" when I try using the windows98 defragger.

I hit C-A-D and closes all of back ground running programs except for explorer.exe and Norton AntiVirus scanner. I run defrag again, same error message.

so.. I was wondering if its possible to use a third party disk defragger(trial or freeware) to work on my computer, if so, do you know any 3rd party program that will do it??

Try closing NAV too, piece of junk if you ask me. You might want to try Diskeeper though, if you can't get it to work.

i had the same prob. with my win98.. i did manage to fix it.. but it was drastic.. reformatted the entire damned computer.. stuck in winMe. then it worked wonders-well, never defraged since. but win98 defragger seems to have bugs if not, your hard disk might be screwed like mine was.

This is currently registered with the FAA as a glider, and according to FAA records, it has no engine - which is technically true, if you ignore that large rocket in back.

I found an even better solution....

I tried WinME for about 2 weeks...then went back to 98....Then got me WinXP....Have had ZERO problems since that....except for damn dirty cheaters that crash my freelancer server.

They had crashed it so bad one night...I actually had to reformat my computer...that sucked.

It sucks to be me because,
1. This is an 80 giger drive
2. I got so much of my creations on that hard disk.

I run scandisk and stil have problems.

Win 98 Scandisk/defrag sucks.

Here's an option that should work for you...even if you don't know anything about DOS.

Click on Start.

Click on Shut Down.

Select REstart in DOS mode.

At the command Prompt:

Type this:

defrag

That will run the DOS Mode defrag.

I would also recommend running this:

scandisk /surface

I've personally used Norton Defrag for years now. It work's great.

Select REstart in DOS mode.

At the command Prompt:

Type this:

defrag

after all my years with dos i never actually knew that lol

argh.. im never gonna get paid.. goodbye a million credits..

I still have a machine with DOS...Use it all the time...I love DOS...Much more stable then Windows.
